A Montgomery man has been convicted of capital murder in the 2019 bludgeoning death of his grandmother.
John Michael Perryman was convicted of capital murder after a weeklong trial before Circuit Judge James Anderson, said District Attorney Daryl Bailey. Perryman was convicted in the “brutal beating death” of Evelyn Perryman, his grandmother, Bailey said.
“This violent criminal viciously beat his own grandmother to death for no reason other than he wanted money and a car,” Bailey said. “The viciousness of the attack makes it clear that this man deserves to be behind bars for the rest of his life. I am proud that my office was able to remove this violent criminal from the streets and bring justice to the family of Mrs. Perryman.
“This man deserves to take his last breath on this Earth behind bars at the Alabama Department of Corrections. When I took office over 10 years ago, one my first acts was to create a Violent Crime Unit. I have continued to advocate for resources to fight violent crime in our community. I am thankful to the Montgomery County Commission and the Mayor of Montgomery for investing in this unit. This conviction serves as an example of the value the Violent Crime Unit brings to the citizens of Montgomery County.”
Evidence at trial showed the defendant broke into his grandmother’s house on the night of June 14, 2019, and beat her to death with a large metal object. He then took money from her wallet and fled the scene in her car.
Mrs. Perryman was found dead the next day around noon when her daughter went to her house to check on her. Patrol officers responded and found a back window broken and the victim dead in her kitchen. The victim’s car was located later that day in an apartment complex near Wal-Mart on Eastern Boulevard. The defendant was taken into custody at the Wal-Mart and gave a statement to law enforcement denying any involvement in the offense.
Investigators were able to locate video of the defendant getting off a MATS bus in the victim’s neighborhood on the night she was killed. Eyewitnesses also saw the defendant going into the victim’s house and leaving in her car. The jury deliberated for an hour and fifteen minutes before convicting the defendant who will be sentenced by Anderson at a later date, Bailey said.
