Sex offender charged with registration violations in Richmond County
ROCKINGHAM — A convicted sex offender is facing several charges related to registration. Richmond County Jail records show 47-year-old Jonathan Verneil Cooper was booked on June 27, and is charged with two counts of failing to register as a sex offender and one count of failing to report a new address as a sex offender.
Volleyball summer camp held at MCHS
A volleyball summer camp was held at Montgomery Central High School, June 18-19, by Parks and Recreation for the town of Biscoe. Third-grade through rising ninth-graders arrived each day at 3 p.m. and worked until 5 p.m. Kindergarten through second- grade arrived at 5 p.m. and worked until 6 p.m.

Help sought for dog issues
Star Mayor Bill Hudson appeared before Montgomery County Commissioners last week seeking help for the town’s dog problems. The problem was the topic of conversation during the most recent meeting of Star Town Board. The problem involves a Star resident who has numerous dogs that occasionally escape their enclosure and run in packs. The dogs have killed several cats and occasionally chase people, frightening them. Many in the town are concerned the dogs will attack a child or an elderly person.

Stephen Thompson to fill District 5 seat on Pee Dee Electric Board of Directors
LILESVILLE – Stephen Thompson of Montgomery County has been appointed to fill the District 5 seat on the Board of Directors for Pee Dee Electric Membership Corporation. The seat became vacant after Donald Thompson stepped down from his duties. District 5 comprises parts of Richmond, Montgomery, and Moore counties.
MCC Welcomes McAlister to Continuing Education Role
Montgomery Community College is pleased to announce the arrival of Sylvia McAlister as its new Dean of Continuing Education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Language Arts and Literature from North Carolina State University, and from Western Carolina University both a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry and Master of Science in Synthesis of Organometallic Polymers.
