UI Extension hosting diabetic meal-planning workshop

MONTICELLO, Ill. — University of Illinois Extension is hosting a workshop in Monticello about carbohydrates and how to plan meals for a diabetic diet.

The free workshop, titled “ Balancing Blood Sugars: Diabetes Meal Planning ,” will be on July 1 from 2-3 p.m. at Kirby Medical Center in the Community Outreach Room. There, participants will learn about counting carbohydrates and the “Plate Method” to help manage diabetes.

“Around one in 14 people in Piatt County have diabetes, which impacts how carbohydrates are used by the body and raises the risk of harm to organs like the eyes, kidneys, and heart,” said nutrition and wellness educator Caitlin Mellendorf. “Meal planning helps individuals with diabetes better manage their blood sugar.”
