MONTICELLO — The City of Monticello will host two outdoor, family-friendly events in the coming days, with one a long-standing tradition and the other a brand-new activity making its debut.

First up, the 28th annual Walk & Roll is returning Saturday morning with a route along Walnut Street to showcase downtown Monticello. Then, on Tuesday evening, Pioneer Park will play host to the city’s first-ever Bubble & Foam Party.

    Walk & Roll

Walk & Roll will find locals walking, rolling and baby-strolling through downtown Monticello from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, June 8.

Much like last year, when road repairs forced a deviation from the former path in 2023, this year’s annual recreation celebration is again taking an alternative route to avoid downtown street improvements.

Due to work on West Broadway Street and Highway 25/Pine Street, this year’s route will begin at the Monticello Community Center and travel along Walnut Street north to Third Street, looping back south down Walnut to the MCC.

The CentraCare booth, located in the Park Barn behind the MCC, will have new bike helmets for only $3, available in all sizes, from toddler to child to youth and adults.

Monticello Royal Ambassador candidates will be on hand helping with fitting the helmets.

Attendees can then stop by the Monticello Chamber of Commerce & Industry booth to pick up a “Pathport,” with just one per family needed, as part of a drawing to win one of about 30 new bikes, which are sponsored by various businesses and groups.

Bring this Pathport to booths set up by participating businesses and organizations all along the route on Walnut, getting check marks stamped along the way.

At these booths, a total of nearly 40 “Pathway Partners” will have activities or health-related displays along the Walk & Roll route.

Once participants have at least 25 checkmarks, they can then turn it in at the MontiArts booth behind the Community Center at the end of their journey to enter the bike drawing.

The live drawing will be held at 11 a.m. at the MCC parking lot, hosted by DJ Dean-O-Mite, who is returning to the event after wowing the crowd in the past with his energy and enthusiasm. Participants must be present to win, with winners getting to pick out which bike they take home.

    Bubble & Foam Party

As summer kicks off, Monticello is inviting children of all ages to its first-ever Bubble & Foam Party on Tuesday, June 11, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at Pioneer Park, located at 9165 Fallon Ave. NE.

This free event will feature a DJ playing family-friendly pop music to get people dancing, along with bubbles, foam and food. Concessions will be available to purchase.

The Bubble & Foam Party will be run by DJ Nicholas Thomas, who supplies everything needed, often organizing similar events in other cities, including Becker, according to city staff.

“I was hoping it would be a nice activity, after school gets out, to celebrate the beginning of summer and reward kids for their school year,” said organizer Sara Cahill of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We thought it would be really fun to bring to Monticello.”

She said anyone is welcome to jump into the bubbles and foam, not just kids.

DJ Thomas told Cahill that the materials used are all environmentally friendly, and cleanup will be a breeze, since the bubbles and foam will be in the grassy area of the park.

“It will be a neat experience, to say the least,” Cahill said.

Later, this month, Pioneer Park will also play host to another family-friendly evening activity, when the city’s free summertime Movies in the Park series kicks off on Friday, June 14.

The 2023 animated adventure comedy film “Migration” will be shown at 8 p.m.

Attendees are urged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and some snacks — and don’t forget the bug spray. Concessions will also be available for purchase.
