After crushing the regular season, the Monticello track and field teams crushed it once again at the Section 5AA Track and Field Championships last week. The Magic hosted the section meet at Monticello High School. The prelims began on Tuesday, May 28 with the finals taking place on Thursday, May 30.

After both teams claimed the Mississippi 8 conference title, the Magic won the boys’ and girls’ team section championships. The girls scored 153, 50.5 more than runner-up Foley. The boys had a similar result, scoring 157 and beating second-place Becker by 44 points.

Monticello is sending a small army to the Minnesota State High School League Class AA State Track and Field Championships. They won’t have to go far either, as St. Michael-Albertville High School is the host for the state meet once again.

In order to qualify for the state meet, an athlete must finish in the top two of an event or hit a qualifying number. The Magic didn’t have much interest in taking chances on second place, they went for gold.

The boys had a lot of success on the track. Nine athletes combined to qualify for the state meet in nine different events.

Luke Emmerich won the 100-meter (11.28). Paul Fasen won the 400 (51.39). Dallas Christensen was the runner-up to Fasen in the 400 (52.17). Ty Brouwer was runner-up in the 800 (1:57.49) and the 1600 (4:29.81). Ryan Richardson was second in the 300-meter hurdles (39.86).

Christensen, Ayden Smith, Fasen and Brouwer won the 4x400-meter relay. Jack Geislinger, Richardson, Christensen and Emmerich teamed up to take second in the 4x2. Smith, Chris Falk, Even Raske and Fasen got second in the 4x8.

In the field events, Monticello sent two more kids to state in three events.

Martavius Guertin won the high jump with a PR of 6-04, which also tied the school record, and took second in the long jump at 21-06.75. Guertin also qualified for state in the triple jump after clearing 44-01.5. Alvin Bropleh won the triple jump (45-10.5) for Monticello.

Not to be outdone, was the defending state champion girls’ team. The girls sent eight kids in nine track events. Lauren Hansen made it nine total girls in 11 total events after qualifying in two field events.

Sasha Steinbach won the 100-meter (12.38) with Emelia Skistad (12.49) finishing as the runner-up. The two switched places for the 200. Emelia (27.78) was the section champ with Steinbach (25.22) placing right behind her. Kaela Skistad won the 400 (56.85). Isabel Mahoney won the 1600 (4:59.71) and the 3200 (10:32.86). Adrienne Hansen was the runner-up in the 400 (1:00.44).

Isabella Angell won the wheelchair 100 (27.87) and 200 (55.18).

Steinbach, Kacie Lilledahl, Kaela and Emelia won the 4x200 relay and Adrienne Hansen, Lilledahl, Camdyn Branson and Kaela won the 4x4.

The 4x200 relay time of 1:40.99 was the fourth fastest time in state history.

Lauren Hansen claimed a berth at state after taking second in the long jump (17-06) and triple jump (35-09). Steinbach also qualified in the long jump after clearing 16-7.

The 2024 Class AA MSHSL Track and Field State Championships begin at 9 a.m. on Friday for the prelims. The Class AA finals are on Saturday beginning again at 9 a.m. at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
