Math, reading tutors sought to help local students

MONTICELLO — School is out for the summer, but the search is on for 900 math and reading tutors to help Minnesota students next year.

Here in Monticello, Eastview Education Center, Little Mountain Elementary, Pinewood Elementary and Swan River Montessori are all looking for tutors.

Research shows early command of reading and math is a predictor of future success, both academically and in life. Yet, fewer than a third of Minnesota students are achieving critical proficiency in either subject.

“Evidence consistently shows that students who receive support from a … tutor make faster progress and greater gains,” said Christine Fankhanel, Director of Minnesota Programs with Reading Corps, Math Corps, and Early Learning Corps. “With so many students needing extra support to achieve grade-level mastery, tutors are essential to helping create a brighter future.”

When students receive tutoring, they make measurable growth and build strong foundational skills. Independent research shows that 83% of kindergarten students receiving Reading Corps tutoring exceeded their targeted growth, while Math Corps students were two times more likely to achieve math fact fluency and meet end-of-year benchmarks.

By placing Early Learning Corps tutors in preschool classrooms, students had significantly higher literacy scores on all five literacy measures, and 80% met early numeracy spring targets.

No teaching experience is needed. Tutors are fully-trained and will serve on-site at a local school 35, 25 or 18 hours a week. All tutors receive a stipend equivalent to about $15 per hour served every two weeks, plus up to $5,176.50 to pay for college tuition or student loans.

Candidates are encouraged to apply now to begin helping students in August.
