Seniors can play bingo with Royal Ambassadors, candidates

By Pam Loidolt Monticello Senior Center,

    2024-06-13

The senior center participated in Monticello’s Walk & Roll event this past Saturday. The weather was beautiful, and hundreds of people stopped by our booth. It was so fun! And it is also awesome that Monticello has so many community celebrations. This is truly a town that comes together and cares.

We have a really fun annual event coming up soon that we hope to see you at. The 2024 Royal Ambassador candidates and current Ambassadors will be at the center on Thursday, June 27 at 1 p.m. to play bingo with participants.

People ages 55-plus are welcome to play and there is no charge. Cash prizes will be given to the winners and strawberry shortcake will be served after the games are played. The Monticello Rotary funds this annual event and we thank them for their support. Please sign up if you plan to attend, 763-295-2000. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the young ladies who wish to represent Monticello.

There is another event we are sponsoring that we hope you can attend, presented by historian Doug Ohman. This presentation he will give is called, “Minnesota’s Rich Agricultural Heritage.” Explore rural Minnesota where our roots go deep and strong starting with the Golden Age of Agriculture. As usual, there will be a number of beautiful pictures and fascinating stories to get and hold your attention. This program will take place at the center on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. Please sign up if you plan to attend.

Attending a defensive driving class can save automobile drivers money and very soon it will get easier. During the 2024 legislative session a change was made to the Accident Prevention Course Rule. Effective July 1, the new rule states that the course must be a total of at least four hours.

This means that a first-time participant can take a four-hour program as their initial training; the eight-hour course will no longer be a requirement. People age 55-plus completing a course are eligible for a 10% insurance discount and the cost is $25.

We have classes scheduled each month including July 24, Aug. 29 and Sept. 25. You can call us for more dates or to sign up for these classes we offer in partnership with the Minnesota Safety Council.

The senior center partners with a travel company to provide quality extended tours. Staff from Landmark Tours will be at our center at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 to talk about a number of extended tours they have scheduled.

A local, family-owned tour operator, Landmark’s inclusive packages feature round-trip airfare, quality accommodations, enjoyable meal experiences, admission to all itinerary attractions, and more. You do not have to sign up in advance to attend this session.

If you like to garden or want to learn more about how to take care of your lawn, come to the “Ask a Master Gardener” session we have coming up at the center.

This month we will discuss vegetable garden maintenance and a host of other topics. A Master Gardener volunteer from the University of Minnesota Extension will be at the center at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21. Come join fellow gardeners to ask a variety of questions. Please sign up in advance if you plan to attend, 763-295-2000, and there is no charge to attend.

You can call our senior center if you wish to take advantage of our Legal Aid service that will be held on Monday, June 24. The Senior Law Project at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid provides free legal services to people ages 60 and over. This program can assist with many issues including Social Security and SSI; consumer, nursing home, and landlord problems; powers of attorney; health care directives; family law issues; and more. Please note that help cannot be given for criminal matters, wills, real estate transactions, or estate planning.

If you want to learn how to knit, I encourage you to give us a call at 763-295-2000 to sign up to come to the knitting class that will take place on Monday, June 17 at 1 p.m. There is no charge to attend and yarn and knitting needles will be provided.

Jess James was the winner of last week’s cribbage tournament. Cathy Jacobson came in second place, and Jim Stewart third. The last euchre tournament winner was Cheryl Thelen, with Gerry Corgard coming in second place, and Ed Lewis third.

I just want to give a reminder that the senior center will be closed on June 18 and 19 for the installation of all new light fixtures.

I would like to wish all you dads a very happy Father’s Day.
