Senior Center seeks volunteers to help during Riverfest

By Pam Loidolt Monticello Senior Center,

    2024-06-20

Monticello’s Walk & Roll is over and now it is time to talk about Riverfest. The Senior Center, City of Monticello, Monticello Community Center, Monticello Times and the Army National Guard will once again celebrate with a Block Party.

People of all ages are invited to stop by the south side of the community center on Thursday, July 11 any time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a free hotdog, chips, dessert and soda. It’s all free. Part of the senior center’s responsibility for the Riverfest Block Party is to provide desserts — and we need a lot. Please contact the center if you can bake bars or cookies for this fun community event, 763-295-2000.

We need your help with another aspect of Riverfest. Volunteers are needed to help with Riverfest Duck Adoptions on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 at Hi-Way Liquors. These are the two days that the senior center committed to helping with the duck adoptions. There are a number of two-hour shifts you can sign up for. Please contact the senior center if you can help. Money raised helps fund Riverfest events.

We need your help with yet one more part of Riverfest. For many years, the Senior Center has taken on the responsibility of running the bingo event after the Sunday parade. We need volunteers to work the bingo tables on Sunday, July 14 in the afternoon. Please call the center to sign up to help with a 1.5-hour shift.

You can also call us to sign up for a fun annual event coming up. The 2024 Royal Ambassador candidates and current Ambassadors will be at the center on Thursday, June 27 at 1 p.m. to play bingo with participants. People ages 55-plus are welcome to play and there is no charge. Cash prizes will be given to the winners and strawberry shortcake will be served after the games are played. The Monticello Rotary funds this annual event and we thank them for their support.

You can give us a call to let you know you intend to attend a presentation that will be given by historian Doug Ohman. This presentation he will give is called “Minnesota’s Rich Agricultural Heritage.” Explore rural Minnesota where our roots go deep and strong starting with the Golden Age of Agriculture. As usual, there will be a number of beautiful pictures and fascinating stories to get and hold your attention. Ohman will share his knowledge on this topic with us at the center on Wednesday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m.

We will be sharing a coach bus to Treasure Island Casino on Monday, July 1 with participants from the Rogers Senior Center. The bus will depart the Monticello Community Center at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 4:15 p.m. The cost is $25 and those going will receive $15 on their casino card and $5 off food. As of my writing this, there were only a few spots left, so call us soon at 763-295-2000 if you wish to go.

There are also a few spots left on the trip to New Ulm and Schell’s Brewery. The first stop on this Wednesday, July 17 trip will be at the Visitors Center where a local guide will step on the motor coach for a riding tour. You will learn about the downtown architecture, see Herman Monument, drive past Gov. John Lind’s home as well as historic churches, museums and memorials. The riding tour concludes at the Glockenspiel Musical Tower where you will hear the bells chime the time of day in Westminster style.

Participants can then walk a block, or hop back on the bus, to have lunch at Veigel’s Kaiserhoff Restaurant, where a choice of two meals will be offered — Landjaeger old-German-style pork and beef smoked sausage with hot german potato salad, sauerkraut and rye bread; or a beer-battered cod basket with french fries and coleslaw.

After lunch, we will tour the August Schell’s Brewery. We will be walking or standing for over an hour on this tour (collapsible wheelchairs, walkers, and canes will fit in the bus’s luggage bays). Participants will have time to visit the museum and sample beers in the tap room. Following the tour, there will be a chance to stroll through the gardens and the gift store before departing for home. The cost is $89 and the bus will depart the community center at 7:30 a.m. and return at about 5:45 p.m.

Last week’s cribbage tournament winner was Larry Dammann. Ron Larson came in second place and Deb Ende third. The monthly 500 tournament took place last week and the winner was Earl Austad. Gerry Corgard came in second place and Gwen Chamberlin third. The last euchre tournament winner was Roger Harwarth and there was a three-way tie for second place between Dale Chamberlin, Ann Ramerth and Glen Schleif.

I submitted the July senior center newsletter to the publisher early last week. Hopefully, the printed copies are at the center now for you to pick up. The monthly newsletter can also be found on the senior center’s website, monticelloseniorcenter.org and on our Facebook page.

Summer is now officially here. I hope you find some time to enjoy the beautiful Minnesota outdoors.
