If you want to spend an enjoyable afternoon outdoors with some really nice people, our second picnic of the summer is coming up. Please join us at Ellison Park next to the beautiful Mississippi River on Monday, July 8. Contact the center to reserve your place, 763-295-2000. A delicious box lunch will be served at noon and then people can play bingo for the chance to win prizes. The cost is $10 per person, and you are asked to pay in advance. We hope you can join us for this fun event.

We have another really fun event coming up in just a couple weeks that we hope to see you at. People of all ages are invited to the Riverfest Block Party on Thursday, July 11. Stop by the south side of the community center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a hotdog, chips, dessert and soda. It’s all free. Part of the senior center’s responsibility for the Block Party is to provide desserts and we need a lot. Please contact the center if you can bake bars or cookies for this fun community event, 763-295-2000,

We need your help with another aspect of Riverfest. Volunteers are needed to help with Riverfest Duck Adoptions on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12 at Hi-Way Liquors. These are the two days that the senior center committed to helping with the duck adoptions. There are a number of two-hour shifts you can sign up for. Please contact the senior center if you can help. Money raised helps fund Riverfest events.

People ages 55-plus do not have to pay any money to take part in an art class we have coming up next month. The class offers an opportunity to learn the meditative art of Mandala stone painting. No painting or artistic skill required. In this class format, participants will be painting a mandala pattern selected from a variety of options. Paintings will be done on a choice of a 5x6 wood plaque (which comes with a stand) or a hand cast 4-inch stone. Learn dotting basics and leave class with the knowledge to make designs on various surfaces.

Be sure to bring your reading glasses if needed to this class that will be held on Tuesday, July 16 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. All supplies will be provided. You do need to pick out your pattern prior to class and the patterns are available at the senior center. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Spaces are filling fast, and there were just four openings left in the class when I submitted this article.

There is plenty of room for people to attend the senior center Handiwork Group. If you like to crochet, sew, scrapbook, embroider, weave, etc. come to the senior center on Tuesday, July 9 at 12:30 p.m. There is no instructor, just people with projects getting together.

The senior center Book Club will get together on Wednesday, July 10 at 9:30 a.m. They will be discussing the book “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett. You can also pick up the next book the group will be reading. You do not have to sign up in advance to attend.

You also do not have to sign up in advance to attend the senior center’s Caregiver Support Group. If you are a caregiver, I encourage you to come to this meeting on Thursday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. If you’re helping an older adult in your life, you are a caregiver. The group is facilitated by licensed social worker Becky Allard. You can also make an appointment to meet individually with Becky. She can help you get the support you need to sustain your ability to provide help and maintain your own life balance. Becky’s phone number is 612-804-0968.

You can get your blood pressure checked at the senior center on Tuesday, July 9 anytime from 11 a.m. to noon. Nurse Ali from St. Benedict’s Center Senior Community will be on hand to provide this valuable service. You do not have to sign up in advance.

Jess James was the winner of last week’s cribbage tournament. Gary Bimson came in second place, and Jerry Bistodeau third. The last euchre tournament winner was Jim Stewart. There was a tie for second place between Glen Schleif and Katie Sterriker.

The senior center and entire community center will be closed on Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. I hope you have the opportunity to take in some festive events.
