The Monticello High School trapshooting team finished second in the conference this past spring. Senior Emily Bohnsack and junior Lance Klersy both finished third in individual conference scoring.

Klersy shot an average of 24-of-25 during the season and ranked in the top 100 scorers in the state out of over 11,000 participants. That was good enough to qualify for the Minnesota State High School League Clay Target Trapshooting Tournament at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake on Friday, June 21.

At the state tournament, Klersy was named the state’s co-champion with Alden-Conger High School’s Ross Huper after they both shot a perfect 100-for-100.

“I’m proud to be the state champion,” said Klersy. “It proves that practice pays off and that I worked hard for a nice reward. I’m grateful for the people that helped me when I was learning how to shoot trap.”

Three days later, at the Minnesota State Trapshooting Tournament Youth Day in Alexandria, Klersy shot a perfect 100 once again.

On Tuesday, June 25, at the Seventh Annual Star Tribune All-Metro Sports Awards at Target Field in Minneapolis, Klersy was named the Star Tribune’s Metro Clay Target Shooter of the Year. It was the first time a high school clay target shooter was honored at the awards.
