A badly abused pit bull from Monticello who was rescued and given a second chance at life has been put down.
Zola was saved mid-attack by Monticello police last year. She suffered serious injuries, and her owner was charged. The 2-year-old dog recovered and became a symbol of strength and survivorship for the local community who followed her inspirational story all the way to Michigan, where she was training with Real World K9 LLC to become a police dog. Christian Losiewski, the animal’s trainer, says despite their best efforts to curb “issues with aggression” for months, she recently had to be put down after biting two animals and a person. “We did everything we could to prevent and correct the bad behaviors she had prior to me getting her,” says Losiewski. Losiewski says everyone at Real World K9 LLC wanted the best for Zola and that they are devastated. Joanne Gerow, with Catskill Animal Rescue, cared for Zola when she was first rescued. She says she’s “incredibly upset” but that the decision was the right one to ensure public safety. "
