    Stretch run for Magic baseball

    With two games left in the regular season, the Monticello baseball team is 11-7 and is the Mississippi 8 runner-up to Becker. The Magic went 1-2 last week. They beat Chisago Lakes 8-2 on Tuesday, May 14 but ended the week with losses to Totino-Grace and St. Cloud.

    Nick Anderson (W) struck out four in 5.2 innings against the Wildcats. Koen Schlangen struck out one in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.

    Campbell Bosacker, Grant Stahlback and Tim Marcus tied for a game-high two hits. Anderson, Stahlback and Carson Deibele all recorded two RBIs. Deibele and Brock Holthaus both had doubles. Caden King drew a walk and stole a base.

    They lost their last two games by one run. On Thursday, May 16, Monticello fell 2-1 to Totino-Grace and a day later they lost 8-7 to St. Cloud.

    Deibele (L) struck out two and allowed just three hits during a six-inning complete-game effort against the Eagles. Monticello hit a combined 3-for-22. Stahlback, Marcus and Colin Lovgren had the only hits. King drew a walk and scored a run.

    Four pitchers combined to allow eight runs (five earned) off of six hits and 16 walks. Stahlback drove in two runs. Tyson Visness recorded three hits and scored twice.

    New team-low, another ‘w’ for Disch

    The Monticello boys’ golf team scored a new season-low 307 during a Mississippi 8 Conference Meet in Chisago Lakes on Thursday, May 16. The Magic won the meet by three strokes over the Wildcats. Senior Tommy Disch (74) won the individual medal.

    Sophomore Brady McGriff (76) tied for third, senior Micab Sieben (78) was sixth and sophomore Carter Lemke (79) tied for seventh. Seniors Quinten Haas (82) and Lance Ingalls (86) weren’t far behind.

    Opatz, Magic, 2nd during conference invite

    The Monticello girls’ golf team played in a conference invite at Bulrush Golf Course on Thursday, May 16. Monticello (368) was a close second to Becker (356) and finished far ahead of Chisago Lakes (416) in third.

    Sophomore Alayna Opatz (82) finished second only to Becker junior Layla Mathews (74) for the individual medal. Eighth-grader Pheobe Figenshau (90) was seventh, sophomore Alex Andrist (93) was 10th and sophomore Madi Moores (103) tied for 12th. Sophomores Jojo Prill (108) and Kendall Metso (113) also played.

    Connect four

    The Monticello boys’ lacrosse team has won four in a row. After they beat Brainerd 11-3 last week, the Magic are now 7-4 and lead the Mississippi 8 at 5-0 with two games left in the regular season. Monticello plays Chisago Lakes (5-5, 2-0) on Thursday. They play Delano/Rockford (8-4) in the regular season finale.

    Aiyden Zinnel scored a game-high five goals against Brainerd. Callan Jacobson and Gunnar Simon both had two goals and two assists. Brady Lerberg and Austin McGill also scored. Michael Jones had two assists and Aidan Widmark had one. Ayden O’Brien made seven saves.

    Finishing strong

    The Monticello girls’ lacrosse team is finishing the regular season strong. They won consecutive games for the second time this season and have won two of their last three and six of their last eight.

    Monticello beat Brainerd 11-1 on Tuesday, May 14. Lauren Moorhouse had a had trick. Ali Schaefer and Addison Kiphuth both scored two goals. Bryn Dahlheimer made seven saves.

    A day later, they beat Sartell/Sauk Rapids 16-1. Cassandra Johnson scored a hat trick. Julia DeChene, Alivia Bame and Willa Scharmer scored twice. Dahlheimer made five more saves. Brookelyn Lindberg, Lily Langanki, Kailey McFarlin, Vivian Spillman, Aubrey Krienke, Tayah Rogosheske and Kiphuth also scored.

    It was McFarlin, Langanki, Rogosheske, Krienke and Bame’s first career goals.

    On Friday, May 16, they lost 6-5 to Chisago Lakes. On Monday they bounced back to beat Rocori 16-3. Stevie Lawrence and Dahlheimer scored their first career goals in that matchup.

    No more funny business

    Monticello softball finished the regular season 9-11 and was fifth in the Mississippi 8 at 6-6. Chisago Lakes (15-5, 11-1) won the conference title. The only conference loss they suffered was to Monticello on Tuesday, May 14.

    Josi Ordorff (W) was sensational in the pitcher’s circle. Her complete game gem allowed the Magic to take the game 3-2. Ordorff had a 6:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sydney Fuller was 2-for-3 with two runs. Ella Priola was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Allison Beilke hit a double and scored. Taylor Marcus also had an RBI.

    Monticello made light work of St. Cloud with a 10-6 win on Thursday, May 16. Ordorff (W) pitched another complete game and struck out four. Hannah Storey was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, two runs and two RBI.

    Monticello lost 5-1 to Orono in the regular season finale and played Big Lake on Wednesday in the first round of the Section 5-3A Softball Tournament.
