September at senior center includes Fitness on Fridays

The Monticello Community Center is sponsoring three separate Fitness on Fridays events in September that you are all invited to take part in. There is no charge to attend them, they will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m., and you can sign up for each at the senior center.

The first is on Sept. 6 and the topic is “Senior Fitness Open House.” The Sept. 13 session is called “Better Balance and Fall Prevention.” The session on Sept. 20 is titled “Living Wellness, Nutrition Tips.” I encourage you to take the time to attend these programs. They may help make a healthier you.

The Arts Grant funding that our senior center received is helping people take classes free of charge they otherwise maybe would not be able to. A new offering we have scheduled is a ceramic pumpkin class. People aged 55-plus can sign up for this three-session ceramics class that will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 23, 30 and Oct. 7. Wear clothes you won’t mind getting some dust or paint on. You will learn to clean greenware, paint the piece, and come away with a beautiful pumpkin. All supplies will be provided. Space is limited, so sign up soon, 763-295-2000.

Another program we are able to offer through the arts grant is cardio drumming. Cardio drumming is a form of exercise that utilizes drumsticks to hit an exercise ball placed on a bucket while listening to upbeat music. It can be practiced by nearly all people and does not require drumming experience. People aged 55-plus can sign up for one, two, or all three classes which will be held on Sept. 11, 18 and 25 from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Both the ceramic and cardio drumming classes are made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The HOME Program offered at our center is made possible by Senior Community Services, the same nonprofit organization that I am employed by. The HOME Program offers a variety of services for persons aged 60-plus including handyperson services, housekeeping, home safety checks, lawn care/snow removal and more. Rates vary by service and discounted rates are available based on monthly income. You can call 763-416-7969 for more information. I am thrilled and thankful that we are able to offer this extremely valuable service to older adults in ours and surrounding communities. This program truly does allow people to stay in their own homes longer.

Another program provided by Senior Community Services and through the HOME Program is Technology Services. An experienced digital handyperson comes to our senior center on Tuesdays to meet one on one with people aged 60-plus. Help is provided with learning how to use a device, signing up for and searching the Internet, managing online security and safety, streaming entertainment options, and more. Free technology support and coaching is available by phone, in-person at our center, and in-home. Give us a call at 763-295-2000 if you would like to make an appointment. Be sure to bring the device you want assistance with to your appointment.

I want to mention one more time that we still have openings on the coach bus to attend the Minnesota State Fair. The bus will depart our center at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 and leave the fairgrounds to come back home at 3 p.m. The $40 charge includes the bus cost and fair admission. Please call us soon at 763-295-2000 if you wish to go on this trip.

Wayne LaBree was the last cribbage tournament winner, with Gerry Corgard coming in second and Pete Christensen third. The monthly 500 tournament was held last week and the winner was Glen Schleif. Sandy Schleif came in second and Alice Kantor third. Last week’s euchre tournament winner was Jim Stewart. Second place went to Deb Ende and third to Cheryl Thelen.

The printed September newsletters are at the senior center. Please stop by and pick up a copy. The monthly newsletter can also be accessed on the senior center website, monticelloseniorcenter.org and on our Facebook page. I email the newsletter out each month, and you can let me know if you wish to be added to that group list.

Lastly, I would like to mention that Monticello’s third annual Let’s Chalk event is this weekend. This is a free, two-day street art festival taking place Aug. 24-25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. It will be located on Walnut and River Street. This year features over 20 professional artists, as well as local amateurs, whose works of art will wow you. There will also be food vendors and live music. I have attended this event in the past and can tell you it is truly awesome to see.
