    Monticello sports round-up: Sept. 26

    Ground and pound

    The Monticello football team improved to 2-2 after an impressive road win over Irondale on Friday, Sept. 20. The Magic ground attack led the way to a 42-0 win. They rushed for 246 yards and five touchdowns on 38 attempts.

    Seven different players recorded a rush attempt, led by Brock and Cale Holthaus with nine. Cale Holthaus had 67 yards and two scores and Brock had 52 yards and a touchdown.

    Carson Deibele was 7-for-7 in the air during his second start at QB. Luke Emmerich led the receiving corps in receptions (three), yards (42) and touchdowns (one).

    Holden Meyers had a team-high nine tackles. Will Kuhn and Courage Daranijo both had a sack.

    Records fall in dual meet wins

    The Monticello girls’ swim and dive team is having another dominant season. On Thursday, Sept. 19, Monticello hosted Chisago Lakes at Monticello Middle School. The Magic broke 21 pool records and three school records during a 109-54 win.

    Adalynn Biegler broke the school and pool record in the 500-meter freestyle (5:00.02).

    Scarlet Urick won the 200 freestyle. McKenna Biegler won the 200 IM. Elsie Farnsworth won the 50 free. Chloe Schwietering won the one-meter dive. Camdyn Branson won the 100 butterfly. Ella Vagle won the 100 free.

    Martin, Biegler, Farnsworth and Branson won the 200 medley relay. McCalla, Simard, Urick and Vagle won the 200 freestyle relay.

    Two days earlier, Monti had a dual meet against St. Michael-Albertville. The Magic won 107-77.

    On Monday, Monticello was named the No. 2 ranked team in Class A behind Visitation.

    Giving the section a heads-up

    The Monticello girls’ tennis team had a conference win over North Branch and a win over section foe St. Michael-Albertville during a quadrangular meet in Brainerd.

    North Branch visited Monticello on Thursday, Sept. 19. All four singles matches against the Vikings went to the Magic.

    No. 1 singles Rebecca Rousslang won 6-1, 6-3. Sam Voll won the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Eve Nygaard playing in the No. 3 singles match won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and Lily Langanki won the No. 4 singles match 6-4, 6-2.

    Madelyn Barrow and Aubrey Krienke won the No. 2 doubles match in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

    Against the Knights, Voll played the No. 1 singles spot and won. Barrow won in her No. 2 singles spot. Julia DeChene played in the No. 3 singles match and won 6-3, 6-2 and Langanki won another No. 4 singles match.

    Lillian Kennedy and Rousslang won the No. 1 doubles match. Izzy Cheney and Brookelyn Lindberg had a comeback victory in the No. 3 doubles match 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.

    During the quad meet, the Magic also beat Duluth East 4-3. Langanki played No. 4 singles and all three doubles matches won. Voll and DeChene won the No. 1 doubles match, Rousslang and Kennedy in the No. 2 doubles spot and Barrow and Krienke in the No. 3 doubles spot.

    Magic best Buffalo, fall to Tigers

    The Monticello volleyball team went 1-1 last week. They swept Buffalo on the road and then fell to conference rival Princeton 3-1 on the road later in the week.

    They traveled to Buffalo on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and won 3-0 (25-21, 25-8, 25-18). Against Princeton, Monticello lost 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 26-28, 18-25).

    Statistics were not recorded for either match.
