    Monticello sports round-up: Oct. 10

    Hitting the ground running

    The Monticello boys’ cross country team ran in the STMA Invitational at the St. Michael Rec Center on Wednesday, Oct. 2. They finished in 12th with 320 points.

    Senior Sameer Gupta ( 17:05.9) was 20th, senior Ezra Pemberton (17:22.2) was 36th, senior Vince Kaley (19:12.5) was 83rd, freshman Henry Hanson (19:18.4) was 87th and senior Tyler Grue (19:35.1) was 94th.

    The girls ran in Alexandria on Saturday, Oct. 5. Isabel Mahoney finished second and a few kids hit personal bests during the meet.

    Co-conference Champions

    The Monticello boys’ soccer team won a share of the Mississippi 8 Conference Championship after ending the regular season with two wins over M8 opponents.

    Needing two wins for a piece of the pie, Monticello beat Becker 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and Chisago Lakes 2-0 on Thursday, Oct. 3. They tied Princeton with a 7-0-1 record to share the conference title.

    It’s the second straight season Monticello won the conference after taking it outright a year ago.

    Senior Alvin Bropleh continued his terrific campaign with two goals against the Bulldogs. Sophomore Bastian Milther and sophomore Matteus Sundine both had assists. Senior keeper Dane Jacobson made seven saves.

    Bropleh added a goal and an assist against the Wildcats while senior Anthony Haman popped in the other goal. Sundine had another assist and Jacobson made two saves, posting his sixth shutout this season.

    Monticello opened the Section 6AA Tournament against St. Francis on Tuesday. The Magic beat the Saints 2-0 back on Sept. 26.

    Section Tournament time

    After going 7-7-2 this season, the Monticello girls’ soccer team was awarded the No. 5 seed in the Section 6AA Girls Soccer Tournament.

    They beat Sauk Rapids-Rice 2-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 1, tied Chisago Lakes 0-0 two days later and fell 3-0 to Delano on Saturday, Oct. 5 to close the regular season.

    Freshman Maddie Davis and junior Alivia Bame scored goals in Monticello’s win over the Storm.

    On Tuesday, Monticello played at No. 4 Becker in the section quarterfinals. The winner plays in the semifinals on Thursday between the winner of No. 1 Zimmerman and No. 8 Big Lake.

    Outpacing the Tigers

    The Monticello girls’ swim and dive team traveled to Princeton for a dual meet on Thursday, Oct. 3. Four-time state champion sophomore Adalynn Biegler set pool records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke.

    “The girls are working hard and have their minds set on championship season to give Visitation and Orono a run at the state title,” stated Head Coach Stacy Biegler.

    Adalynn Biegler, junior Camdyn Branson, sophomore Scarlet Urick and senior Serayna Greenwaldt started the meet off with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Elsie Farnsworth, Greenwaldt, senior Kennedy McCalla and junior Ella Vagle combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay.

    Senior McKenna Biegler won the 200-yard freestyle. Branson won the 200 IM. Farnsworth won the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Chloe Schwietering won the one-meter dive. Freshman Esther Vagle won the 100-yard free while Ella Vagle won the 500-yard free.

    This weekend the girls compete in the True Team Section meet at Becker.

    Magic bow out in 3rd round of sections

    The Monticello Magic girls’ tennis team went 1-1 during the 2024 Section 5AA Girls Tennis Team Tournament.

    After getting a bye in the first round, the Magic beat St. Michael-Albertville 4-3 in round two. In round three, they fell 1-6 to No. 1 seed Maple Grove, who played Wayzata in the team final on Wednesday.

    The individual tournament begins on Monday, Oct. 14.

    Against the Knights, Monticello won two singles matches and two doubles.

    Sam Voll (No. 2 singles) beat Addison Nibbe 6-1, 6-2. Eve Nygaard (No. 4 singles) beat Paige Herbst 6-1, 6-2.

    Lily Kennedy and Julia DeChene (No. 1 doubles) survived Izzy Olson and Kayla Wolkerstorfer in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Paisyn Wiley and Aubrey Krienke (No. 2 doubles) also faced some trouble but eventually escaped Reagan Cocking and Violet Ditlevson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

    During the match against Maple Grove, Voll and DeChene partnered up in the No. 2 doubles match and won 6-4, 6-3.

    Magic win 4th straight non-tournament game

    Last week, Monticello beat familiar conference foes St. Francis and North Branch, which gave them a four-match winning streak.

    They swept the Saints on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Junior Alayna Opatz had 11 of Monticello’s 35 kills. Junior Brooklyn Sigler had 17 assists. Junior Olivia Frie had four of 12 aces. Opatz and junior Ada Nelson each had three and senior Molly Hegle had two.

    Sophomore Adison Konz had seven digs on defense and senior Ella DeMars had five.

    On Thursday, Oct. 3, Monticello beat the Vikings in a long five sets (25-23, 14-25, 27-25, 22-25, 17-15).

    Nine different players recorded a kill, including junior Ellie Koprek, junior Addison Ruda, sophomore Klara Schultz, senior Josi Ordorff and junior Abby Ruda.

    During the Midwest Fall Classic at St. Michael-Albertville High School over the weekend, Monticello went 2-3. They picked up wins against Rocori and Grand Rapids.
