Orange Beach City Schools Earns National Accreditation
Orange Beach City Schools recently announced it has earned Cognia Accreditation. Cognia is a nonprofit that provides quality assurance for schools, school districts and education service providers. It nationally recognizes districts that meet rigorous standards focused on productive learning environments, equitable resource allocation that meets learners’ needs and effective leadership. To receive this accreditation, Orange Beach City Schools said it participated in an extensive self-assessment process and comprehensive evaluation led by Cognia experts who compared the procedures and practices of all aspects of the district to research-based standards and evidence-based criteria. To earn Cognia accreditation, a school district must implement a continuous improvement process and submit it for internal and external review. Schools in good standing can maintain their certification for a six-year term.
Duck’s Diner Opens Second Location In Former Hazel’s Nook Location
The owners of Duck’s Diner in Orange Beach have opened a second location in the former Hazel’s Nook, a Gulf Shores breakfast spot that recently closed after 67 years, AL.com reports. Duck’s Diner—which, like Hazel’s, is open for breakfast and lunch only—began in 2003 in Orange Beach. Duck’s Diner co-owner Garrett Spence’s mother, Michelle Deerman, bought the business in 2014. Spence joined her as a co-owner a few months later. Unlike Hazel’s, Duck’s Diner won’t have a breakfast buffet and will sell alcohol. A 16-ft bar will replace the buffet area. The Duck’s Diner breakfast menu, which is available all day, includes omelets, pancakes, country ham, steak and eggs, corned beef hash and a breakfast burrito, as well as the restaurant’s signature banana-stuffed French toast with butter pecan sauce. The lunch menu features burgers, po’ boys, wraps, chicken tenders, a ribeye steak and a Rueben sandwich, along with another Duck’s Diner specialty, Gouda cheese grit cakes topped with grilled shrimp, grilled tomatoes and a Creole sauce. Spence will own the building, and he and his mother will co-own the restaurant at 120 East Fort Morgan Rd. in Gulf Shores.

Amtrak service from N.O. to Mobile could be a reality by Super Bowl
Passenger rail service could return to the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Mobile early next year, thanks to a new agreement between the city of Mobile and Amtrak. Mobile city leaders said last week they have finalized language for a funding agreement and ground lease that will pave the way for construction of a new train stop — the final hurdle needed before the service can begin. A majority of the Mobile City Council, which had opposed the deal earlier this spring because of concerns over its cost, is expected to approve the agreement next week.
