MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville Township High School Art Club recently completed a mural in the entrance of the Montville Animal Shelter, featuring animals that are currently in the shelter and those that have been adopted in the past.
Five students from the Art Club worked on the mural over the span of four months, according to Art Club Co-President, Natalia Dudek. The students would go to the animal shelter once a week to work on the project.
Assistant Animal Control Officer Lindsay Persico wanted something done to the wall to make the shelter cheerier upon entrance. Sue LaSalandra from Montville Pet Parents reached out to the high school in order to get the project started.
The Art Club sent a sketch to the shelter to approve the design, but the final product was still a surprise to the shelter, according to Persico.
“We decided to paint the mural at the animal shelter to give back towards our community through a fun and creative lens,” said Dudek.
The students also decided to add two of their own pets into the mural alongside the animals from the shelter. Dudek’s dog, Misiu, and Co-President Hailey Dragone’s cat, Remi, are both featured in the mural.
Rocky, the shelter's mascot, according to Persico, is the first dog in the mural. Rocky had been in and out of the shelter three times from 2016-2022. Aside from the mural, there are other paintings and portraits of Rocky in the entrance of the shelter.
The Montville Animal Shelter currently has many cats and dogs up for adoption. Aside from those featured in the photo gallery, there are many kittens and dogs looking for homes, such as Sausage, the 10 month old dog who has been in the shelter since April.
