Shabaz Khaliq resigns as Mooresville High School boys basketball coach

    By Kyle Neddenriep, Indianapolis Star,

    2024-07-27

Mooresville boys basketball coach Shabaz Khaliq resigned from his position on Friday, athletic director Mike Mossbrucker said.

Mossbrucker declined further comment, other than to say the school would work on an action plan next week for hiring a new coach. Khaliq did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The timing for hiring a new coach is certainly not ideal with school starting in the next two weeks. Khaliq was 35-34 in three seasons at Mooresville, including a 10-14 mark last season. He was hired following the 2020-21 season to replace longtime coach Bob Carter, who retired after 18 seasons leading the Pioneers.

Khaliq coached previously at Fort Wayne Elmhurst, Fort Wayne North Side and Richmond, compiling a career record of 249-130 in 16 seasons. His team at North Side in 2016-17 reached the Class 4A state championship game, falling to Ben Davis.
