Workers in several construction vehicles kicked up dirt Friday to prepare the site of a future 385-unit apartment complex in Camarillo. A renovation over a decade in the making is finally making serious headway through Santa Monica city government, giving new life to one of the area’s premier destinations. During Monday’s meeting of the city’s Architectural Review Board (ARB), a presentation was given on the mass renovations planned for the Miramar Hotel site at 1133 Ocean Avenue, a project with near-unanimous approval by the board and public commenters. The comprehensive expansion and modernization of the Miramar would add to the full-service hotel by adding up to 60 residential condominiums and associated common areas, restaurant and retail spaces, a three-level subterranean parking garage and significant publicly-accessible open space.

Santa Monica police drones help catch car thief in action at beach parking lot
Santa Monica police have invested in a drones to help fight crime in their city.Over the busy July 4 holiday weekend, one of their drones caught a car theft suspect in the act.In the video, the drone spots a man in a backpack casing a busy parking lot at the beach.He removes tools from his sweatshirt and punches out the lock on an SUV, then slides into the driver's seat.The drone operator alerted nearby patrol units. When they arrived the man was already inside another vehicle, a pickup truck.The drone operator was able to direct officers right to the man. They arrested him and found numerous stolen items in his possession.He's being charged with burglary and other theft related crimes.
