Oregon Researchers Paint Wind Turbines Partly Black to Reduce Bird Deaths
A simple coat of black paint on the white blade of a wind turbine could save countless birds from flying into the machines and to their deaths each year. It’s working in Norway, and now researchers from Oregon State University are trying it in the West. With $400,000 allocated by the Legislature, Christian Hagen, an associate professor in the university’s Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences, is leading a team that’s painting turbines at a PacifiCorp wind farm in Wyoming. A doctoral student and officials with the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Department of Energy are collaborating on the project.

Stricter Punishments In Future Of Those Who Serve Underage Drinkers

At the August 20th Rawlins city council meeting, the governing body voted to impose additional penalties on businesses for violations of the city’s alcoholic beverage ordinance. City Attorney Pinita Maberry-Nave explained that the amendment provides the city with more options to penalize people who break existing alcoholic beverage laws.

Laramie County School District#1: New School Year Underway
Monday, August 26 is the first day of classes in Laramie County School District#1. You can see the district calendar for the entire year here. The school year runs through Wednesday, June 4. The first holiday of the school year is in just a few days, Labor Day on Sept. 2. Multi-day school vacations include Thanksgiving on November 27-29th, Christmas, Dec. 3 through Jan. 3, and Spring Break, which rns from April 1-4. Students get several other days off either as single-day vacation days or due to staff days. In Wyoming winter weather is also a constant possible disruption, although the district has gone to virtual learning days, with students taking lessons via computer for those days.
