Local school districts will offer free meals to students next year
Gatesville ISD announced via Facebook on Monday that all elementary and primary students will eat free in the cafeteria for the 2024-2025 school year. While the school district has served free meals to the primary school students for several years, Superintendent Barrett Pollard said the school received official approval from the Texas Department of Agriculture to serve free breakfast and lunches at the elementary campus. The school is able to provide free meals under Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a non-pricing meal service option for schools and school districts in low-income areas.

Temple police identify pedestrian killed in fatal accident
TEMPLE, Texas — A traffic accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian has left one person dead, according to the Temple Police Department. The incident occurred around 10:04 a.m. on Wednesday, July 17, at the intersection of 31st Street and Scott Boulevard. The preliminary investigation reveals that an SUV struck the pedestrian while turning at a signal light. The vehicle and driver remained on the scene for the duration of the investigation.

Child car seat inspections were held at a Killeen law firm on Saturday. Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers, a personal injury law firm, offered certified safety inspections for children’s car seats. In the event a family did not have a seat or it was not up to code, a new seat was provided by the firm and its partner for the event, the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. Thunderstorms likely for Killeen area as temperature cools down
Thunderstorms are likely across Central Texas and the Killeen-Fort Cavazos area in the days ahead. Alongside the storms comes a possibility of flooding and expected cooler temperatures not eclipsing 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Firefighters tackle blaze at Temple debris collection site
Fire broke out Saturday afternoon at the debris collection area of the Temple Solid Waste Division and firefighters continued to fight the blaze into the evening. Temple Fire & Rescue responded to the fire at 2:37 p.m. along Loop 363 on the east side of the city with eight units and 14 firefighters. In the area adjacent to the city landfill, they faced heavy flames and smoke that rose from a large brush pile of debris collected from around the city following the May severe storm.
Gas price down in Killeen and across nation
The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Killeen-Fort Cavazos area has decreased from a week ago, according to AAA. In the area, the average price was $3.02 on Saturday, which is 6 cents cheaper than last week’s average and 11 cents cheaper than it was this time last year, according to AAA.
