Gas price down in Killeen and across nation
The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Killeen-Fort Cavazos area has decreased from a week ago, according to AAA. In the area, the average price was $3.02 on Saturday, which is 6 cents cheaper than last week’s average and 11 cents cheaper than it was this time last year, according to AAA.
Today is Guam Liberation Day
While today marks the 80th anniversary of Guam Liberation Day, there was no big celebration in the Killeen-Copperas Cove area this year. Typically, the Chamorro Association of Central Texas organizes a local Guam Liberation Day celebration at Ogletree Gap Park in Copperas Cove — an annual event that attracts 1,000 to 2,000 people.
Killeen P&Z member takes issue with councilman’s assessment of their abilities
The Killeen Planning and Zoning Commission has been at odds lately with the Killeen City Council, as evidenced by the recent council meeting last week. Such types of rezoning can often be controversial, such as in May when the city of Killeen attempted to push through the rezoning of more than 100 acres in the area of Featherline Road. But that vote failed, partially because the P&Z voted against it, causing a situation where a supermajority, or six yes votes, were needed in order for it to pass.

Firefighters tackle blaze at Temple debris collection site
Fire broke out Saturday afternoon at the debris collection area of the Temple Solid Waste Division and firefighters continued to fight the blaze into the evening. Temple Fire & Rescue responded to the fire at 2:37 p.m. along Loop 363 on the east side of the city with eight units and 14 firefighters. In the area adjacent to the city landfill, they faced heavy flames and smoke that rose from a large brush pile of debris collected from around the city following the May severe storm.

Killeen police investigate double homicide involving armed subject
KILLEEN, Texas — Killeen police are investigating a double homicide after officers found two individuals dead from apparent gunshot wounds in a residence on Karen Drive. Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson pronounced 28-year-old Tanesha Sedwich deceased at 8:46 p.m. and 29-year-old Walter Sedwich at 8:48 p.m. on July 22, 2024. Autopsies have been ordered to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.

Rain inundated Central Texas on Monday with at least 0.83 inches recorded at the Draughon-Miller Central Texas Regional Airport in Temple.
