MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — Earlier this year, two marching band students from Morgantown High School were selected to march in the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

12 News sat down with the pair on Tuesday to hear their thoughts on being selected to Macy’s Great American Marching Band, which consists of more than 100 high schoolers from around the country.

Senior drummer Maddie Carver plays the snare drum in the Morgantown High School Marching Band and has been playing drums since she was eight years old. This will actually be Carver’s second year performing with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band after being previously selected in 2023 .

She told 12 News that she felt nervous last year, but still enjoyed the experience. “I loved being there. It opened up so many new opportunities for me, and it was really great to meet people that had the same dedication for band that I did,” Carver said.

Meanwhile, junior Evan McConnell has been playing the mellophone since the seventh grade. He said that he looks forward to visiting New York City with his family as well as performing with the Mountaineer Marching Band, who will be marching in the parade as well.

“Just being in the same parade as them will be so exciting, especially in a big parade like that,” McConnell said.

Be sure to stay tuned to WBOY-NBC this Thanksgiving to see the pair represent West Virginia in the 98th Edition of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
