MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A man has been charged after officers found crack rock cocaine during a traffic stop for an expired registration in Morgantown.

On July 15, officers with the Morgantown Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Walnut Street for an expired registration, according to a criminal complaint.

After the vehicle pulled to the side of the road, officers said that “two passengers began attempting to exit,” but officers told them to remain in the vehicle. One of those individuals was identified as Michael Knapp, 49, of Clarksburg.

While officers were writing a traffic warning for the expired registration, a drug detection K-9 gave a positive indication for the presence of narcotics, the complaint said.

In the resulting search, officers said they found a set of digital scales, “multiple” empty plastic bags and 21.23 grams of a substance that Knapp identified as crack rock cocaine.

In a Mirandized interview, Knapp stated that he and other people “went together to purchase the large amount for $800,” but that the bag belonged to him, the complaint said. While speaking to another individual from the vehicle, Knapp said, “‘I wasn’t going to let you eat something that was mine’,” according to the complaint.

Knapp has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He is being held in North Central Regional Jail.
