Lois “Jeannie” Casamento, owner of Hair Force, died at Calvert Memorial Hospital April 24 (4/24/24, as her daughter noted). She was 84.

Jeanne (as everyone knows her now) was born in Cyclone, West Virginia, daughter of Charles and Helen Elkins. She graduated from Oceana High School in Wyoming County, W.V., where she pursued a career in the beauty industry.

Which probably had a lot to do with her marriage to Philip Frank Casamento. Together they established Mr. Phil’s Hair Force in September 1972, on Old Alexandria Ferry Road, across from Andrews’ Virginia Ave. gate.

Phil died in 1972, leaving Jeanne to take over the shop which then became just Hair Force. She worked at the shop, touching the lives of many with her talent and passion. Daughter Tara is now in charge.

Jeanne is predeceased by her parents and siblings, Leonard, Sue and Frosty. Survivors include sons Philip and Gregory and daughter Tara; daughters-in-law Louise and Jennifer, and son-in-law Michael; grandchildren, Camron, Samantha, Nicholas, Helen, Addison and Zachery; siblings, Linda and Vicki. Services were at Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Kendra A. wrote about Hair Force: “This the perfect place for anyone who wants expertise with a welcoming atmosphere.... I’ve referred multiple male/female friends from base to go there and they all have positive experiences regardless of who they go to.” And yes, I’m a customer; Tina is my operator.

Slow down on Suitland Road — speed cameras are installed.

Changing landscapeThe Washington Post has warned us to “prepare to weather a scorcher of a summer in Washington.” But I’m tough — I’ve survived years of scorchers without air conditioning.

In late 2011, the chain bookstore Barnes & Noble closed its location on M street in Georgetown. Now Barnes & Noble is returning to the building it vacated and will reopen this summer. Now, I want to know when Prince George’s will reopen one of its bookstores.

A home at 5889 Suitland Road has sold for $285,000.

Every year on their anniversary, Dad would sing “Let me call you Sweetheart” as he turned Mom’s wedding ring around on her finger. He had first sung that to her when he proposed at a Chinese restaurant in Detroit.
