Below are summaries of Victory League games played during the first weekend of the Region 8C Tournament in Pierz (Aug 2-4), compiled by Sports Editor Nick Tabatt. The second weekend of the tournament was held in Upsala between Aug. 10 and Aug. 12.
Billygoats punch ticket to state tournament
The Buckman Billygoats secured its spot in the State tournament after upsetting the Pierz Brewers 11-1 in eight innings Sunday, Aug. 8. One of the crucial parts of the victory was Ben Thoma hitting a grand slam home run in the first inning. Noah Boser went 3-4 at the plate, hitting two doubles, had an RBI and three runs. Others with RBIs were Matt Kummet, Aaron Weber and Max Barclay. On the mound, Bryce Flanagan, who was a draftee from the Fort Ripley Rebels, pitched eight innings for the Billygoats. Flanagan threw 11 strikeouts and allowed three hits. The Billygoats ended the game with 12 hits and one error.
The Brewers’ Preston Vieth, scored the team’s only run after getting hit by a pitch in the top of the third inning. Kaden Kruschek went 1-3 at the plate, hitting a double, along with Rylee Rauch earning two walks. Rauch also led the team on the mound, with two strikeouts and allowed two hits. The Brewers had three hits and no errors.
Cubs lose to Avon
The Randall Cubs took on Avon in an elimination game, Saturday, Aug. 3, losing 11-0 in seven innings. Zach Gwost pitched two-plus innings for the Cubs, throwing four strikeouts. Those with hits were Alex and Zach Gwost, Travis Wenzel and Brett Strack. Avon had 10 hits and no errors, while the Cubs four hits and one error.
Brewers defeat Avon
The Pierz Brewers had a long battle against Avon during one of the first games of the Region 8C tournament Friday, Aug. 2. The Brewers came out, winning 7-4 in 10 innings. Preston Vieth and Phil Zynda both went 2-5 at the plate and each hit one home run. Gunnar Wicklund went 1-4 with three RBIs.
On the mound, the Brewers' Pete Schommer pitched three innings, throwing four strikeouts. The Brewers’ draftee from the Fort Ripley Rebels, Jack Schafer, also threw four strikeouts in two innings. The Brewers ended the game with 14 hits while Avon had nine. Both teams made two errors.
Billygoats upset Cubs in close game
The Buckman Billygoats had an 11 inning battle with the Randall Cubs, just outscoring them 3-2. Matt Kummet went 1-3 at the plate, with an RBI and a home run. Aaron Weber and Travis Kahl each had a run batted in. Matt Taughtes pitched all 11 innings, throwing 12 strikeouts and allowed two walks. The Billygoats finished the game with nine hits and three errors.
The Cubs’ Caleb Strack also had A good day on the mound, throwing 11 strikeouts and allowing one walk. Carter Gwost went 1-4 at the plate, hitting a double, a walk and one stolen base. Others with stolen bases were Caleb and Brett Strack. The Cubs had six hits and two errors.
