    flyers Tennis team ties for second in Staples; Pierz beats three straight teams

    The Little Falls Flyers tennis team kicked off the season, hosting Rocori Friday, Aug. 16 and traveled to the Highway 10 Tournament in Staples Tuesday, Aug. 21.

    At the Highway 10 Tournament, the Flyers tied for second place with New London-Spicer and Rocori, each scoring 39. Staples-Motley won the meet with a score of 47.

    One of the Flyers’ biggest highlights at the Highway 10 Tournament was Addie Ranka placing first in her singles bracket. Ranka won two sets 6-0, advancing her to the. She won a lengthy semifinals match in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 10-5. She finished the tournament winning the championship round 6-2 and 6-0.

    Elise Ballou took fifth, winning the in the consolation championship singles bracket. She lost the first round, losing 3-6 in two sets, but came back to win the second round 8-1. Ballou also won the consolation championship round 8-1. Another consolation victory for the Flyers came from the team of Myla Ballou and Alayah Iverson in doubles. They lost the first round of their bracket, but came up with a win in the first consolation round, winning 8-2. They beat a team from Rocori in the consolation championship match 8-5.

    The battle against Rocori on Friday, Aug. 17 was wild as it came down to the final match. Rocori ended up with the victory, beating the Flyers 4-3.

    In the singles, The Flyers’ Olivia Litke won a match against Rocori’s Hailey Holthaus. Ballou lost the first set 5-7, won the second set 6-4 and finished with a victorious third set 6-3.

    During the doubles matches, Myla Ballou and Iverson won a match in two straight sets. They won the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-0.

    The Flyers traveled to a triangular meet in Fergus Falls Thursday, Aug. 22. They will travel to another tri-meet in Annandale Monday, Aug. 26.

    Pioneers win two meets

    The Pierz Pioneers tennis team also had two strong performances to the 2024 season. They first won a triangular meet against Mora and Crosby-Ironton Friday, Aug. 17.

    The Pioneers beat Mora 4-3. A doubles match was won by Abbie Virnig and Addie Thielen, winning 6-1 and 6-0. The doubles team of Adi Tomala and Laura Young also won two straight matches (6-1, 6-1). In singles, The Pioneers victories went to Clara Tax, winning one set 6-1 and the second set 6-3.

    The Pioneers moved onto Crosby-Ironton, winning the match 4-0. Olivia Thielen and Madelyn Kessler won the No. 1 doubles match 6-1 and 6-4. Tax and Kansas Block and were victorious in their match, winning both sets 6-2. Virnig and Young also won a match in two straight sets. They beat their opponent 6-1 in the first set and 6-0 in the second.

    The Pioneers’ victors in the singles were Thielen, winning 6-4 and 6-2. Tomala won her match by default.

    The Pioneers traveled to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Monday, Aug. 19. The match was cut short due to rain, but the Pioneers walked away with a 4-0 win.

    Tax won two straight sets in singles 6-0 and 6-1. The Pioneers won three matches in doubles, Block and Kessler, along with Addie and Olivia Thielen were dominated their matches, winning both sets 6-0. Virnig and Young had a similar result in their doubles match, winning two sets with a score of 6-1.

    The Pioneers will host Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Monday, Aug. 26.
