After starting the season 0-3, the Little Falls Flyers football team ended the streak, beating Perham 35-13 in the Flyers’ homecoming game Friday, Sept. 20.

The Flyers’ scoring came from the many rushing yards by Luke Avery and receiving by Trent Roden. However, Flyers Head Coach Joe Bartos also gave credit to the community for cheering on his team.

“I think the first win is always the hardest one to get, so to get it here at homecoming in front of a really big crowd, that’s a ton of fun,” Bartos said.

Avery sparked the Flyers victory with a five-yard touchdown run at 9:26 in the first quarter. The extra point attempt from Derrick Young gave the Flyers a 7-0 lead.

With 2:51 left in the quarter, The Flyers worked their way to the red zone. Gavin Anderson completed a 10-yard pass to Roden in the end zone for another score, followed by a two-point conversion run from Avery to extend the lead 15-0.

The teams kept each other at bay until 3:10 in the second quarter, when Avery pushed through the line of scrimmage, and reached for a one-yard touchdown. Perham came up with a short with a completed five-yard touchdown pass to cut the Flyers’ lead 22-7 before the end of the first half.

The Flyers extended their lead late in the third quarter, with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Roden to make a 29-7 lead. Perham struck again early in the fourth quarter with a six yard pass to Ashton Detloff. An unsuccessful PAT kept the Yellowjackets trailing 29-13.

Avery capped off the Flyers’ score with a well-fought 13-yard scamper, by Avery, breaking through multiple tackles into the end zone. Besides his scoring, Luke made some long, game-defying plays like running a 45-yard gain into Perham’s territory late in the third quarter.

“Luke is an aggressive runner,” Bartos said. “He makes great cuts. He reads the field really well.”

Avery finished the game with 22 carries for 222 yards. He gives credit to the offensive line for its great blocking and great offensive play calling. He described the mindset he had while in action.

“It was just ‘see player, run through player’ or ‘see player, go around player.’ That’s all it was,” Avery said. “It was just finding those holes and go.”

Roden said one of the things he wants things to improve on is making more effective blocks on defense. However, he feels good about the homecoming win.

“Defense was pretty good for the most part,” Roden said. “I mean we pushed the ball. We played as a team.”

Anderson completed 15 out of 20 of his pass attempts for 193 yards. Roden caught five passes for 52 yards. As a team, the Flyers had a total of 492 yards while Perham came up with 109.

The Flyers traveled to play Dylworth-Glyndon-Felton Friday, Sept. 27. They will host Fergus Falls Friday, Oct. 4.
