Emergency Blood Shortage: Heat & Hurricanes Cause 25% Drop in National Blood Inventory

Record-breaking heat and hurricanes disrupt blood drives nationwide, prompting urgent calls for donations.
MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The American Red Cross is grappling with an emergency blood shortage, as a combination of record-setting summer heat and severe natural disasters have severely impacted blood drives across the nation. The organization's national blood inventory plummeted by 25% in July, raising alarm as hospitals continue to rely on dwindling supplies to meet patient needs.
As the nation's largest blood supplier, the Red Cross is responsible for collecting around 40% of the U.S. blood supply, which supports over 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers. Despite relentless efforts, the current shortage threatens to disrupt critical care for patients nationwide.
The situation is expected to worsen as August ushers in peak hurricane season. With experts predicting an "extremely active" season, the impact of storms like Hurricane Debby and Hurricane Beryl has already been felt. These hurricanes have caused severe flooding, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions, leading to widespread cancellations of blood drives throughout the Southeast.
Even in the face of these disasters, the demand for lifesaving blood products remains steady, quickly depleting the available supply. The Red Cross is urging eligible individuals in unaffected areas to donate blood as soon as possible. Unlike other resources, blood cannot be manufactured or stored indefinitely—it relies solely on the generosity of volunteer donors. The blood already on the shelves is what saves lives during emergencies.
To help alleviate the shortage, the Red Cross is encouraging everyone to make an appointment to donate. Potential donors can easily sign up through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Additionally, donors can save time by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of their donation. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
Don’t wait—roll up a sleeve and help ensure that life-saving blood is available for those in need during this critical time.
