During routine testing, the Morris County Division of Mosquito Control found one mosquito pool positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in Rockaway Township.

Morristown, NJ — A recent discovery of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus in a mosquito pool in Rockaway Township has prompted immediate action by the Morris County Division of Mosquito Control. The infected mosquitoes were identified in a confined area along Valley Road during routine surveillance.

In response to this health concern, targeted insecticide treatments will commence to curtail the mosquito population in the affected region. The Division plans to use synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, which are known for their quick-dissipating residues and effectiveness in mosquito control. Treatments are scheduled for the early morning hours to minimize exposure to residents.

Local authorities are urging residents to take preventive measures against mosquito bites. Recommendations include repairing any gaps in window and door screens, limiting outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours such as dawn, dusk, and early evening, and wearing protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants. Applying insect repellent to both clothing and exposed skin, as per label instructions, is also advised.

To further reduce mosquito breeding sites, residents should eliminate standing water in areas such as flowerpots, buckets, and playground equipment, and maintain regular cleaning schedules for birdbaths.

For additional information on protecting against mosquito-borne diseases and property-specific mosquito control, residents can contact the Rockaway Township Division of Health at 973-983-2848. Concerns about mosquito infestations or standing water can be reported to the Morris County Division of Mosquito Control at 973-285-6450. Further details, including updates on spraying schedules, are available on the Division’s website at www.morriscountynj.gov/mosquito.
