Mia Libretti, a senior at The Pingry School, was presented with the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center’s Ruth Award at an awards ceremony on June 18. This award is presented annually to a senior high school student who is an active Morristown Medical Center volunteer and completes more than 50 hours and six months of consecutive service. The Ruth Award, which is a one-time award of $500 to offset the cost of college tuition, is designed to recognize outstanding service to Morristown Medical Center for dependability, loyalty and unselfish service to others.

Senior high school students who volunteer at Morristown Medical Center may choose to complete an award application, along with an essay, for consideration. One winner is selected each year by the WAMMC Hospital Liaison Committee, and Librettii was this year’s unanimous choice.

In her essay, Libretti stated that she began to envision her path following her grandmother’s aneurysm. “While the doctors treated her symptoms, it became clear to me that the nurses were her true heroes. It was in these moments that I understood the profession and ministry nursing represents. I wanted in!,” she said. She further shared that she can’t wait to be academically prepared to help people in the medical sense and will be attending the University of Miami for the next four years pursuing a degree in nursing.

While at Pingry, Libretti took a leadership position in its Anatomy Club, volunteered at Morristown Medical Center, became CPR, AED and is First Aid certified. At Morristown Medical Center she has helped anxious families in the Surgical Family Waiting Room and the Emergency Department, and further shared that she can’t wait to be academically prepared to help people in the medical sense.

The Ruth Award was established in 1978 to honor Ruth Epstein, a devoted member of the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center and its President from 1967 to 1970. Epstein was dedicated to helping others, and she exemplified the volunteer spirit.
