The Morristown Police Department have termed the death of a 76-year-old local resident who was found dead in his residence Wednesday morning “suspicious.”

Few details have been released by police about the death of Richard Cote of Elmore Street in Morristown and why they considered it to be suspicious.

According to a press release late Wednesday night, the Morristown Police Department reported that at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday officers responded to conduct a “welfare check” on Cote after an “associate” of his said they were concerned about him.

Responding officers found Cote dead inside the residence, the release stated, adding that the investigation remains ongoing.

“MPD believes this is an isolated incident and does not pose an active threat to the community,” the release added.

The Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit’s crime scene search team is assisting in the investigation.

Cote’s body was taken to the Vermont Chief’s Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy, according to the press release.

Phone calls to the Morristown Police Department seeking additional information related to the investigation were not immediately returned Thursday.
