Trump’s Lies About Abortion in America Were Particularly Appalling
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. Former President Donald Trump did manage to say one accurate thing about abortion at Thursday night’s CNN presidential debate: He’s responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade. “I put three great Supreme Court justices on the court,” Trump said, “and they happened to vote in favor of killing Roe v. Wade and moving it back to the States.”
“Storm Clouds Loom Ahead”: Justice Jackson Has a Warning About the Big SCOTUS Abortion Punt
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. Just four months from a presidential election, the Supreme Court dismissed a major abortion case on Thursday, delaying a final decision on whether a federal law mandating that hospitals provide emergency medical treatment includes the right to medically-necessary abortions.
A Renowned Debate Expert on How Biden Can Beat Trump’s Lies in Real Time
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. Like many Americans, I am dreading the first presidential debate of the 2024 election, an event that’s all but certain to feature a litany of vile lies by one candidate and awkward, if not painful stumbles by another.
The First National Data on Birth Control Post-Dobbs Is Here, and the News Is Not Good
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. In the wake of the June 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs decision, as dozens of abortion clinics shut down in states with total or near-total abortion bans, reproductive justice advocates warned that the closures wouldn’t just affect patients seeking to terminate their pregnancies. Family planning clinics have historically provided more than abortion services, often offering basic gynecological health care for women. Indeed, more than 1 in 10 women get their birth control from these clinics, including those that also provide abortions. For low-income patients and people of color, the numbers are closer to one 1 in 5. Without access to affordable and reliable contraception, many more women were bound to become pregnant, whether they liked it or not. And without abortion as an option, many of them would be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term.
Supreme Court Looks Set to Avoid Deciding Whether Women Can Get Emergency Abortions

Trump Is Inciting Violence as the Election Approaches
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. The public has long been accustomed to Donald Trump saying outrageous things, even when he appears to encourage political violence. It’s almost as if his aggrieved and menacing rhetoric has become a normal part of American politics.
The Utah Governor’s Lonely Crusade to Make Politics Nice Again
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. On a stormy night in February, Phil Lyman made a campaign stop at the Taylorsville-Bennion Heritage Center, where a warm room full of conservatives had braved the weather to hear from several Utah political candidates. A Republican state representative, Lyman was pardoned by former President Donald Trump for a trespassing charge he picked up for driving an ATV in an illegal protest on public lands in 2014. Now he was running for governor.
MAGA Candidate Loses Bid to Replace Mitt Romney
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. Former President Donald Trump hates losers, but he backed one in the Utah Senate race this year. Despite a much-promoted endorsement from Trump, Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs lost the GOP primary to Rep. John Curtis by 20 points on Tuesday. The primary victory all but ensures that Curtis will be the state’s next US Senator in a state that hasn’t sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1970.
Rising Seas Will Disrupt Millions of US lives by 2050, Study Finds
This story was originally published by the Guardian and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. Sea level rise driven by global heating will disrupt the daily life of millions of Americans, as hundreds of homes, schools and government buildings face frequent and repeated flooding by 2050, a new study has found.
The race to understand—and profit from—period blood.
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. On a Wednesday in early March, a lab scientist named Carlo removed a paper strip containing a dried blood sample from a plastic envelope. He inserted it into a contraption resembling a large hole punch, and I watched as a small wine-colored disc dropped into a test tube. Next, he would add a buffering solution and feed the tube into a chemistry analyzer, a machine resembling a short tanning booth that scanned the sample for a glucose level indicator.

Most Immigrant Deaths in ICE Detention Could Have Been Prevented
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. On June 15, Jhon Javier Benavides-Quintana, an Ecuadoran immigrant, died of undetermined causes in the Otero County Processing Center, a detention center in New Mexico. He was 32 years old. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which recently filed a civil rights complaint on behalf of the detainees at Otero over “retaliatory use of solitary confinement,” has called for an investigation. The detention center is owned by Otero County but run by the private prison operator Management & Training Corporation. Benavides-Quintana’s death occurred less than a month after two other immigrants died while in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in Georgia and Michigan.

G7 Nations Are Ignoring the “Cow in the Room”—Beef and Dairy Emissions
This story was originally published by Grist and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration. Last week, the leaders of the world’s seven biggest economies convened in Italy to discuss several pressing global issues during the annual gathering known as the G7 summit. They agreed to lend Russia’s frozen assets to Ukraine, pushed for a ceasefire in Gaza, and pledged to launch a migration coalition.
Will Congress’ Power Over Tax Policy Survive This Supreme Court?
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. In December, I published an interview with the tax policy expert and attorney Steve Rosenthal titled, “The Supreme Court Case That Could Upend a Century of Tax Law.” Dropped last week, the high court’s ruling in that case, Moore v. United States, was narrow and thus relatively inconsequential on the real issue—whether Congress has the power to tax unrealized wealth. But that dangling determination will come back to haunt us.

Trad Wives Are Thriving in the Post-Dobbs Era
Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters. Last year, despite minding other people’s business online, I didn’t know what a “trad wife” was. Now it seems like every time I log in to Instagram or TikTok, there is another video of a beautiful woman cleaning her home or making an extraordinarily long and needlessly difficult meal. These trad wives, short for traditional wives, are women who post online content showing themselves adhering to patriarchal gender roles while keeping house and raising children—and making it look easy.
Finally, the American Climate Corps Is Getting Down to Business
This story was originally published by Grist and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.
