Westonka Community Theatre eagerly invites audiences to immerse themselves in a world of magic, whimsy, and love with its upcoming production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.”

The production will feature a total of six shows spread across two weekends: July 19 at 7 p.m., July 21 at 2 p.m., July 26 at 7 p.m., July 27 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and July 28 at 2 p.m. The July 21 performance will also include American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. All shows will take place in the Westonka Performing Arts Center.

In its fifth season, WCT’s latest production, directed by Jamie Harms, showcases a robust cast of 68 performers, 10 technical members and is supported by 27 pit crew members. Harms brings extensive experience, having directed WCT’s production of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” as well as technical director on “Wizard of Oz” and “Beauty and the Beast, “also numerous productions at Grandview Middle School and Mound Westonka High School.

“The majority of the cast members have been on stage before, but we’re also welcoming some newcomers this year,” said Melissa Pickert, WCT secretary. “We have a diverse range of ages, spanning from our youngest member at eight years old to individuals in their seventies.”

The cast list includes 11 named roles as well as three ensembles.

“Jamie has done a great job ensuring that everyone has a role, whether it’s a lady-in-waiting, a soloist, a rat, a servant, or a featured dancer,” added Pickert.

“‘Cinderella’ was a staple in my childhood,” Harms said. “I remember the VHS tape living in our VCR on repeat! It holds such a special place in my heart. I loved how magical the whole story was. Growing up, ‘Cinderella’ was one of the first tales that ignited my imagination and passion for storytelling. I have always been captivated by the journey of its characters and the beautiful message that dreams can come true. Growing older and watching different versions and adaptations of the story made me see that the timeless tale holds the themes of hope, transformation, and the belief that kindness can change the world.”

In creating the production, Harms said she wanted to stay as true to the original story as possible. The version theater-goers will see on stage is the television version that featured Julie Andrews in 1957; however, it is also pulling some modern-day themes into the story.

“One unique direction we are emphasizing is Cinderella’s inner strength and resilience…and her active role in shaping her destiny and the choices she makes along the way,” Harms said.

Harms is also committed to enhancing the character development of the entire cast, ensuring that even the supporting characters have depth and significance.

“This approach allowed for a richer, more engaging narrative where every character’s journey contributes to the overall magic of the production,” she said.

Add the orchestra, music, dazzling costumes and choreography, and audiences should be in awe.

“We have ensured that the production is suitable for all ages, making it a perfect outing for families,” the director said. “By balancing the storytelling with elements that children can enjoy, we create a show that appeals to both adults and young viewers”

To build anticipation for the production, WCT hosted a Royal Party at Back Channel Brewing on June 30, featuring carnival games, prizes, a special “Royal Tea” brew for kids, characters, cast members, and music.

Additionally, the cast enjoys themed rehearsal nights such as pajama night, travel night, and pride night to enhance camaraderie and enjoyment.

“We always emphasize the ‘big C’ in Westonka Community Theatre,” explained Pickert. “That’s one of the things I love about it—interacting with fellow performers and meeting new people.”

Tickets for Cinderella are $20 and can be purchased in advance at https://sites.google.com/277apps.org/westonkapac/tickets .
