A toddler was rescued after falling into a sump pump drain in their yard in Moundridge, Kansas, on Sunday (July 28). The 14-month-old boy was playing outside when he fell into the drain and got trapped at the bottom of the 12-foot hole .

When first responders arrived, they were unable to reach the boy, who was standing at the bottom of the hole and crying.

"Kids are always a concern," Moundridge EMS Director Brian Falco told KAKE . "Especially small kids, he doesn't communicate. He doesn't follow instructions. It's not like an adult what we can say hey, lift your hands up."

After a few failed attempts at rescuing the child, Officer Ronnie Wagner assembled a makeshift catch pole using PVC pipe and rope. They lowered the pole into the hole and managed to loop the rope underneath the boy's shoulders so they could pull him out.

Miraculously, the boy was unharmed in the fall.

"The combined effort from all responding agencies made this incident run smoothly and ultimately successful. We are very thankful for the tight knit first responder community in Moundridge and our relationships with each other help make calls like this successful. Thank you all for your support," the Moundridge Police Department said in a statement on Facebook .

The department released body camera footage of the rescue, which took nearly 20 minutes. You can watch the full video below:
