Four local baseball teams were selected for the NCHSAA State Playoffs: Mount Airy, East Surry, North Surry and Surry Central.
Mount Airy
The Granite Bears earned the No. 1 seed in the 1A West with a 21-1 overall record.
Mount Airy won both the Northwest 1A Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The Bears are riding a 21-game winning streak and are tied for the most single-season wins in school history – a feat last accomplished in 1939 – and haven’t lost since their season opener on Feb. 29.
Mount Airy will host No. 32 Langtree Charter (4-17) in the first round. The Lions finished seventh in the Catawba Shores 1A/2A Conference with a 2-12 league record.
The Bears and Lions only had one common opponent in 2024: Elkin. Mount Airy beat Elkin 9-6 on April 16 and 6-0 on April 19, while Langtree defeated Elkin 10-7 on March 20.
Mount Airy is 11-1 at home this season, while Langtree is 1-10 on the road.
The winner of Mount Airy and Langtree Charter will take on the winner of No. 16 East Wilkes (14-9) and No. 17 Highland Tech (11-12).
North Surry
The Greyhounds earned the No. 14 seed in the 2A West with a 15-9 overall record.
North Surry finished runner-up in the Foothills 2A Conference regular season standings and reached the FH2A Conference Tournament. North started the season 6-6, but is 9-3 since April 5.
North will host No. 19 Maiden (17-7) in the first round. The Blue Devils finished runner-up in the Catawba Valley 2A Conference with a 10-4 league record.
North Surry and Maiden had no common opponents in 2024.
The Greyhounds, who are competing in their first home playoff game since 2019, are 8-1 at home this season, while the Devils are 7-5 on the road.
The winner of North Surry and Maiden will take on the winner of No. 3 Morehead (22-2) and No. 30 Southwestern Randolph (9-14).
East Surry
The Cardinals earned the No. 17 seed in the 2A West with a 12-10 overall record.
East Surry finished fourth in the Foothills 2A Conference with a 7-5 league record. East also reached the semifinals of the FH2A Tournament. The Cards are 7-5 since April 1.
East Surry will travel to No. 16 McMichael (15-11) in the first round. The Phoenix finished third in the Mid-State 2A Conference with an 8-4 record.
East Surry and McMichael had three common opponents this season: North Stokes, South Stokes and West Stokes. East Surry lost to West Stokes twice – 9-2 and 13-3 – while West beat McMichael three times with scores of 7-2, 5-4 and 9-8. East Surry beat South Stokes 4-1 in their only meeting, and McMichael beat South 11-1 and 10-0.
The teams split games against North Stokes. East Surry beat North Stokes 6-1 on April 24, while McMichael lost to North Stokes 11-10 on Feb. 26.
East Surry is 4-6 on the road this season, while McMichael is 11-3 at home.
The winner of East Surry and McMichael will take on the winner of No. 1 Burns (25-0) and No. 32 East Burke (9-12).
Surry Central
The Golden Eagles earned the No. 29 in the 2A West with a 12-12 overall record.
Surry Central finished fifth in the Foothills 2A Conference with a 4-8 league record. Central competed in the quarterfinals of the FH2A Tournament. The Eagles are 5-7 since April 1.
Central will travel to No. 4 Forbush (23-2) in the opening round of the playoffs. Forbush won the FH2A Regular Season Championship with an 11-1 record, then won the FH2A Tournament by outscoring league opponents 21-1.
Forbush was 2-0 against Surry Central during the regular season. The Falcons defeated the Eagles 13-0 on March 28, then 1-0 (9 inn.) on March 29.
Surry Central is 4-8 on the road this season, while Forbush is 13-1 at home.
The winner of Surry Central and Forbush will take on the winner of No. 13 West Stokes (20-5) and No. 20 Pine Lake Prep (12-8).
