Cedar Ridge Elementary School recently hosted a family literacy event called "Revved Up for Reading."

At this event parents met with teachers and were given ways to help their students work on reading skills at home and over the summer. All students were given free books and bookmarks and then made their way to the courtyard area for some fun and games.

Community members volunteered their time and talents to show students lots of vehicles to get "revved up" about. Students were able to talk to volunteers about their vehicles and even sit in the vehicles. Members of the Surry County Rescue Squad were on hand to give CPR lessons to families while other students visited the fire trucks and sheriff deputy's car. '

Mount Airy, Lowgap, and Dobson public libraries joined to share summer reading events for the community. The Boy Scouts joined in by providing details about their program and offering the excitement of their derby race track. At each stop, students were given a raffle ticket and prizes were drawn at the end of the event. The grand prize was a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge sponsored by Matt Swift of Surry County Farm Bureau.

Sponsors and community members that volunteered at the event included: Chick-fil-a Mount Airy, CF Jones, Scoops, 13 Bones, Northern Wellness and Fitness, Grounded Coffee, Toyota, Beulah Community Center, Brandi Easter with Paparazzi, Ashley Talbott with Farmasi, Liz at Salon Resi, Woodruff Family, Cathy Wetter, Khloe Smith, and Matt Swift with Farm Bureau, Skull Camp Fire Department, Surry County EMS, Tate Family, Bobby Talbott, Caleb Mitchell, Austin Snow, Pete Snow, Beulah Community Center, Mount Airy Public Library, Lowgap Library, Dobson Library, Boy Scouts representative Chris Lawson, and the Cedar Ridge PTO.
