    Special Events

    Writer’s Road Show — Bringing Authors to Readers on Sunday May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Pages Books & Coffee. Patti Meredith, author of the novel “South of Heaven,” will make three stops on the Writers Road Show book tour sponsored by the Northwestern Regional Library system. Recognized as a book club favorite and a natural storyteller, Meredith takes readers to the Sandhills of North Carolina and introduces them to her cast of quirky characters, in a family story that will strike a chord and always leads to delightful conversations.

    The Surry County Master Gardeners will hold a workshop, Tomatoes in a Bucket with OLLA Irrigation, on Thursday, May 23 at 2 p.m. Participants should take a five-gallon bucket and a 4-inch diameter clay pot with lid and join us for the free gardening workshop.

    An Afternoon With the Author — Join us Saturday, May 25 at 2 p.m., as we welcome local author Cameron Kent to talk about his latest book, “The Oak Island Book Club.”

    DIY Magazine Gift Bows — May 30, 2 p.m., five gift bows per person. Bring your own scotch tape. Call the library to register.

    Barbie Movie Night at the Library — Friday, May 31 — 6:30 p.m., Photo Prop Pictures, 7 — 9 p.m. PG13). First 10 people to arrive will get a Barbie swag bag. Everyone gets a Barbie bookmark. Popcorn and water provided.

    Know Thy Shelf: A Book Club That is Genre Based — Exploring historical fiction with Emily. May’s book is “Go as a River” by Shelley Read. Follow the book club group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1093128458 553225. We will discuss the book in the Facebook Group.

    Storytime at the Mount Airy Public Library is here for kids of all ages. Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. is Toddler Time for children ages 2 and 3; Thursday at 9:30 a.m. is Book Babies for children ages birth to 2 years old; and on Thursday at 11 a.m. is Preschool Storytime for ages 4-5, which is live streamed at https://www.facebook.com/groups/preschoolmapl

    All of our storytimes are available virtually. Have a sick child or the weather is bad, look for our storytime groups on Facebook and join us for a live storytime.

    Teen Advisory Board, the last Monday of the Month at 6 p.m. Teens and tweens, let your voice be heard. Join us for the newly formed Teen Advisory Board. Share your ideas with your peers for book club selections, movie presentations, and teen programs. We will meet on the last Monday of every month at 6 p.m., in lieu of the AV Club.

    Alternate Learning Program for Adults with Learning Differences on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 10 a.m. — What to Expect: Read-alouds, crafts, games, puzzles, fellowship. RSVP at 336-789-5108 and ask for Emily.

    Art in Action Afternoon at the Library is held every fourth Friday at 2 p.m. The next meeting will be May 24. Join us to make collage art, acrylic painting, watercolors, adult coloring, and blackout poetry art.

    Hooked — Join our crochet and knitting club, every Wednesday at 3 p.m. Open for all skill levels. Bring your own yarn and make the group project or bring your own project to work on.

    The Chess Club meets each Wednesday from 4:30 — 7:30 p.m. Come join our group and hone your skills. Call the library for more information, 336-789-5108.

    Tai Chi Fridays. Experience meditation in motion, 10 a.m. every Friday in the Multipurpose Room. All skill levels are welcome.

    It’s Yoga Y’all meets on the third Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m.

    The Community Book Club — North Carolina Reads is North Carolina Humanities’ statewide book club, annually featuring five books that explore issues of racial, social, and gender equity and the history and culture of North Carolina. Our book club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. May’s selection is “The Violin Conspiracy” by Brendan Slocumb.

    Chapters Book Club meets the third Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Members discuss the different books they have read.

    Middle Homeschool Mondays at 2 p.m. every Monday. Makerspace and STEAM related activities for ages 11 and older, in the Multipurpose Room.

    Pre-Teen Book Club meets June 20 at 4 p.m. We will be reading “Chester Keene Cracks the Code” by Kekla Mogoon. Come out and meet other teens your age, snacks and socialization

    Teen Book Club will meet May 23 at 4 p.m. We will be reading “A Pho Love Story” by Loan Le. Come out and meet other teens your age, snacks and socialization.

    Cooking Club is the second Tuesday of the month at 2 p.m. Bring your favorite recipes to share. Our next meeting is June 7, our dishes for June are picnic side dishes. Bring one dish and share the recipe.

    Murder, Mystery and Mayhem Book Club on the last Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. The May selection is “Truevine: Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest: A True Story of the Jim Crow South” by Beth Macy. Come in person or join us online at https://www.facebook.com/groups/mmmatmapl .

    Plaid Cloth Book Club — Every Second Wednesday at 12 p.m. at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. For June, read what you want and be ready to discuss.

    STEAMed Up Tuesdays at 4 p.m. — Interactive fun and learning for grades K — 6.

    Homeschool Thursdays at 2 p.m. for Makerspace and STEAM related activities. For ages 10 and younger, in the Multipurpose Room.

    The A.V. Club at the Library Mondays at 6 p.m. for teens and preteens. We will be learning how to use video and sound production equipment.

    The Mount Airy Public Library is also collecting donations for Yokefellow Food Pantry. For May we are collecting spaghetti and spaghetti sauce. Just drop donations in the blue container in our entrance.
