The Jesse Franklin Pioneers, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History’s chapter of the Tar Heel Junior Historians, recently brought home nearly a half-dozen awards for their work displayed at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh as part of the Junior Historians state conference.

In the Video Documentary contest the Intermediate Group, consisting of Rickie Caudill, Adah Huff, Kylie Jones, Madilyn Kassen, Paytin Key, and Solomon Shipley, brought home first place for their “Home Town Homicides” video. This documentary covered the Lawson Family Murders and Hege Mail Bomb incident.

In the Exhibit and Visual Arts contest, the Jesse Franklin Pioneers brought home four awards.

In the Elementary Group division, “George Fawcett and the UFO Museum” placed first. The project was created by Amelia Edwards, Abigail Huff, and Ada Sebens.

In the Intermediate Group division, “Earnhardt Family Racing Legacy at Daytona” placed first. The project was created by Michael Jessup, Kylie Jones, and Paytin Key.

In the Secondary Individual division, Madeline Caudill placed second for her project entitled “Doing Their Part” which highlighted the early contributions of women in the war effort, both inside and outside of battle.

In the Secondary Individual division, James Caudill won first place for his project, “The North Carolina Granite Corporation” which is a point of pride in Mount Airy.

These projects are now on display at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh.

“We are so proud of these students and their amazing dedication to their passions and interests,” museum officials said.
