    District Announces Administrative Changes

    Press Release — June 19, 2024

With the recent selection of Dr. Phillip Brown as Mount Airy City Schools superintendent and Dr. Olivia Sikes as assistant superintendent, several openings were created with their promotions and subsequent shifting in other administrator roles.

That has resulted in four local officials being named to new posts.

Dr. Krystal Tyndall has been named director of Career and Technical Education and Academic Support. She will oversee SparkNC and digital teaching and learning throughout the system in addition. She will also be leading Advancement Via Individual Determination, which is aimed at providing students with the tools they need to be successful in courses in middle school and beyond along with Restore, Inspire, Support, and Educate programming.

Dr. Tyndall graduated from Meredith College in 2001 where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in dance education. She went on to East Carolina University to earn her Master of Science in counselor education in 2010 and in 2015 she acquired her school administration add-on licensure from Gardner-Webb University. She earned her EdD in educational leadership from East Carolina University in 2022. Dr. Tyndall joined the district in 2020 and has worked as career development facilitator, an assistant principal, and coordinator for academic and support programs.

“Dr. Tyndall has a passion for students and helping them explore their futures,” Dr. Sikes said. “We are excited to welcome her into her new role and are confident that academic programming will continue to thrive under her direction and leadership.”

Elaine Reales will serve as Multilingual, Dual Language Immersion (DLI), and World Languages coordinator. She will work to support multilingual educators and students, the DLI program and world languages found throughout the district. She comes from the classroom after 18 years of years teaching, six of those being as a DLI educator.

She graduated from Lees-McRae College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with an endorsement in Spanish and English as a Second Language. Reales also has a business administration degree equivalency from Universidad del Atlántico in Colombia, South America. She joined the district in 2015 and has taught at BH Tharrington Primary School and JJ Jones Intermediate School.

Dr. Sikes noted, “Elaine Reales will continue the progress and growth of our dual language immersion program. Her successful classroom experience will be a tremendous asset in her new role working with multilingual learners. I am excited for the future under her direction.”

Dr. Sandy George will be the director of auxiliary support and athletic fundraising. She will oversee the Transportation Department and guide the system in energy conservation efforts. She will continue to work closely with the Mount Airy City Schools Foundation to raise funds for middle and high school athletic programs and projects.

Executive Director Emily Hardy shared, “Dr. George has been a loyal Mount Airy City Schools employee with more than 30 years of invaluable service to our school district. Her extensive relationships and connections within the community further strengthen her ability to navigate these roles. With Sandy’s expertise, we are confident in her ability to uphold the highest standards of excellence in her new role.”

With the retirement of Jon Doss on July 1, a vacancy is being created to run transportation. Rodney Hardy will be serving as transportation support on a part-time basis. He joins the district with 18 years of experience running the transportation department in Surry County.

Dr. Brown noted, “Rodney’s immense knowledge and experience in transportation will serve our students and families well through this transition and into the future. We are fortunate to have him and Sandy leading this department moving forward.”
