    McCullough Memorial Tournament draws large field

    A full field of 72 ladies from across North Carolina and Southwest Virginia competed on Thursday, June 20, in the 17th Annual Janice McCullough Memorial Tournament at Cross Creek Country Club.

    The tournament, sponsored by the Cross Creek Ladies Golf Association, features a Captain’s Choice format.

    Two teams tied for first place with scores of 65. Following a playoff on the scorecard, the team of Maggie McCormick of Cross Creek Country Club; Lucy St. Clair of Tazwell County Country Club, Pounding Mill, Virginia; Brenda Duty from Tazwell, Virginia; and Jean Schlottman of Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance; took first place, while the team of Karen Spicer of New River Golf Club in Sparta; Pam Marion of Mount Airy Country Club; Laurie Mangers; and Tina Johnson of Cross Creek Country Club finished in second place.

    Third place, with a score of 66, went to the team of Susan Hatcher of Cross Creek Country Club; Jenny Braswell of High Meadows Country Club in Roaring Gap; Kate Pierson of Greensboro National Golf Club in Summerfield; and Mary Simmons of Cross Creek Country Club.

    The team of Beth Anne Aheron of Deep Springs Country Club in Stoneville; Danielle House of Mount Airy Country Club; Andrea Abernathy from Clemmons; and Marilyn Rieker of Oak Valley Country Club in Advance.

    Taking fifth place in the tournament with a score of 68, was the team of Bonnie Montgomery of Bryan Park Golf Course in Greensboro; Mary Jane Carico of Blue Ridge Country Club in Galax, Virginia; Kim Spivey of Cross Creek Country Club; and Michelle Stanley of Mount Airy.

    Closest to-the-pin prizes went to Kate Pierson of Greensboro National (Hole #2), Susan Murray of High Meadows Country Club (Hole #7), Kim Spivey of Cross Creek Country Club (Hole #10), and Debbie Beasley of Cross Creek Country Club (Hole #14).

    The tournament is held each year in memory of Janice McCullough, who was an enthusiastic golfer, instrumental in establishing the inclusive invitational format which is open to all female golfers, regardless of club affiliation.

    Tournament chairman Gina Vogler wishes to thank McCullough Tile and Stone in Winston Salem for their major contribution to the success of the tournament over the years along with Brannock & Hiatt Furniture Company and F. Rees Company in Mount Airy.

    The tournament is traditionally held each year on the third Thursday in June. All area lady golfers are invited to play, call Cross Creek Country Club for more information.
