Breaking into the job market for the first time can be a scary prospect for young people who are beginning a transition from one era of their lives to another. Some young people want to get to work over the summer but need a helping hand with application skills or developing their resume.

A solution arrives Tuesday in the form of a resume workshop, targeted on teenagers, will be held at Interworks in downtown Mount Airy.

“We’re excited to invite local teens to our resume workshop on Tuesday,” said Morgan Johnson Vasquez, executive director of Mount Airy Downtown Inc.

“In partnership with NCWorks Surry and Mount Airy Parks and Recreation, we aim to provide essential skills and resources to help teens create a standout resume, even if they’ve never had a job before,” she said.

“The resume workshop will set you up for success even if you’ve never had a job before. NCWorks will be on-site with their mobile lab to help with resume development.”

“Enjoy free food and drinks, yard games, and music while you learn. Plus, take a tour of the Interworks co-working space,” she said. “Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to kickstart your job search and have some fun.”

Johnson said the event is perfect for teens who are eager to learn how to build their resume and gain confidence in their job search.

Teens are encouraged to bring with them identification such as state issued ID, driver’s license or permit, or school ID card. Johnson added if the teens have any work experience, including volunteer work, to bring details supporting that.

More than anything though, Johnson said that teens should come armed with a positive attitude. “Come ready to learn and have fun.”

“Staff members will be available to accompany interested participants to visit various downtown businesses to deliver their freshly developed resumes and inquire about job opportunities,” she said.

Perhaps the life lessons on job hunting will begin before the teens even leave the house as decisions will need to be made on how to present oneself during a job interview.

Johnson said teens do not need to worry about breaking out their Sunday best or polishing up a pair of dress shoes — unless they so desire.

To that end, she said there is no dress code for the event, “Dress code is casual, but neat. We recommend wearing casual attire, think of it as a smart-casual dress code where teens can feel comfortable but still make a good impression.”

Participation in the event will help young people get another set of eyes on their resume and provide exposure to the application process in an office environment that can seem light years away from the classroom the students are accustomed to.
