GREENSBORO — Two local basketball standouts took part in the N.C. Coaches Association’s East-West All-Star game on July 15.

North Surry High School’s Sadie Badgett suited up for the West as she competed in her final high school basketball game, and the West was coached by two-time State Champion Angela Mayfield of Mount Airy High School.

The East All-Stars came away with the win 84-68. Northeastern High School’s Jasmine Felton, who will play for Campbell University next year, was named Most Outstanding Player after posting a 30-point 10-rebound double-double while shooting 76% from the floor. The East shot 44% as a team, while the West shot 30%.

Badgett, who will continue her basketball career at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, played 22 minutes in the all-star game. The Greyhound graduate finished with five points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Badgett was North Surry’s first East-West All-Star in six years, with the most recent Greyhound selection being Mikaela Johnson in 2018.

Badgett was selected for the All-Star game following a stellar senior season in which she led the Greyhounds in all five major statistical categories; she finished the season with averages of 16.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 4.1 steals and 1.2 blocks. She scored her 1,000th career point this past season and finished her career with more than 1,200 points.

Badgett hit double figures in 25-of-27 games and had 15 or more points in 19 games. She was named Foothills 2A Conference Player of the Year and named to the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association’s All-District First Team.

Badgett finished her career at North Surry with an overall record of 66-25 and a conference record of 38-10. She helped lead North to back-to-back conference championships in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Mayfield served as head coach for the East-West All-Stars for the first time in her career, though it wasn’t her first experience with the game. Mayfield had two players compete in the East-West game during her tenure as head coach — Jo Snow in 2018 and Shaunae Sawyers in 2019. Jordan Hiatt competed in the all-star game in 2012 when Mayfield was an assistant coach.

Mayfield boasts a career record of 134-67 at Mount Airy. She led the Granite Bears to back-to-back state championships in 2016-17 and 2017-18; Mount Airy had a combined record of 47-2 over those two seasons.

Mayfield was named Doris Howard Female Coach of the Year in 2018 and is a multi-time Northwest 1A Conference Coach of the Year.
