Just as NFL players are reporting to training camps in anticipation of the coming season, Mount Airy schools are readying key personnel for the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Aug. 13 will be the first day of school, with three administrative appointments announced this week ahead of that.

This includes Barry Hill being named to a tech education leadership position locally for a new state program, according to information from Carrie Venable, chief officer of communications and technology for Mount Airy City Schools.

Also, Maggie Mitchell and Katie McCrary will be new assistant principals at J.J. Jones Intermediate School and Mount Airy High School, respectively, an announcement from Venable details.

The three moves will be effective next Thursday.

Hill will be shifting to Mount Airy High School to serve as Spark Lab leader.

He will advise and support students participating in SparkNC’s interdistrict model centered on high-tech learning opportunities.

SparkNC is a state-funded pilot program bringing those experiences to high school students in 17 school districts.

Those participating in the program have set up labs where students can choose from a menu of short courses in topics such as robotics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and software development.

Hill has 15 years of educational experience, according to information from Venable.

He has a master’s degree in executive leadership from Gardner-Webb University and a B.S. degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Hill previously was curriculum facilitator at Jones Intermediate.

“I am excited about the opportunity to apply my leadership skills to the NC Spark Lab for Mount Airy City Schools,” he said in a statement.

“I look forward to seeing how the lab ignites innovation and fosters limitless growth for our students’ future.”

    New assistant principals

Mitchell, before being transferred to the role of assistant principal at Jones Intermediate, served as an assistant principal at Mount Airy High School for the past three years.

She earlier was the school’s curriculum facilitator for two years. Mitchell has been in education for 12 years, as a high school mathematics teacher, curriculum facilitator and assistant principal.

Mitchell holds a master’s degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a B.A. in mathematics from Catawba College.

She and husband Kenley have two children, Wade and Walker.

“After five wonderful years of supporting Mount Airy High School students and staff, I am excited for the opportunity to serve as assistant principal at J.J. Jones Intermediate School,” Mitchell said in a statement.

“My time at the high school has increased my desire to help build a strong foundation for our younger Bears,” she added. “I look forward to building relationships with the students, staff and families at Jones. Thank you, Mount Airy City Schools, for this amazing opportunity.”

McCrary, the new assistant principal of MAHS, has been teaching for 20 years, holds a master’s degree in middle grades education and is certified in mathematics and academically or intellectually gifted education.

She also holds a National Board Certification, the most-respected professional certification available in education.

McCrary recently was selected as a North Carolina Principal Fellow at Appalachian State University through a program that prepares outstanding educators to serve as school administrators in the state’s public schools.

She is coming from Mount Airy Middle School, where McCrary taught mathematics and served in an advanced teacher role.

She and husband Josh have two children, Adalyn and Sadie.

“I am thrilled to transition into the role of assistant principal at Mount Airy High School,” McCrary said in a statement. “I feel incredibly honored and blessed for this opportunity and am eager to collaborate with staff, students and families to build upon the great work already underway.”

Venable advised Thursday that with the administrative changes announced this week, along with others earlier, the school system “should be all set now” in terms of having everyone in place.
