This weekend is one of the few remaining on the Surry Arts Council’s calendar of events that does not have three Summer Concert Series shows at the Blackmon Amphitheatre.

Have no fear, the council is presenting a show this weekend meant to carry spectators away on a magical journey that will take them “Into the Woods.”

The Surry Arts Council is presenting two performances this weekend of Steven Sondheim’s 1987 musical ‘Into the Woods’ at the Andy Griffith Playhouse at 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Saturday the curtain will rise at 7 p.m. and the Sunday show is a matinee starting at 3 p.m.

“The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an epic fairytale about wishes, family, and the choices we make,” described the Arts Council.

The show blends together elements from well-known fairy tales of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, and Rapunzel into one cohesive story that, in true Brothers Grimm style, takes a step or two toward more adult themes.

“The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk,” council organizers said. “When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them.”

“Into the Woods” was a hit when it arrived on Broadway in 1987 taking several top Tony Awards that year losing out on Best Musical to a little known musical, “The Phantom Of the Opera.” Since that time Disney turned the musical into a big budget feature film with Meryl Streep that has helped keep the blended story alive and kicking for almost 40 years.

The performers this weekend will be led by Musical Director Darrell Beck and Director Tyler Matanick who has been busy wearing many hats, including as technical director, light designer, sound board operator, and general tech crew guru working on sets and design.

Tickets for the shows are $25 and can be purchased at the door or by visiting the arts council website at www.surryarts.org/shows/livetheatre.html.

Also coming this weekend, the arts council is presenting a Dance Studio Open House event for the upcoming 2024-2025 Dance Season.

It will be held Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cindi Griffith Dance Studio found in the lower level of Andy Griffith Museum.

This event will give interested dancers the chance to meet course instructors and register for their preferred classes. Designed for dancers as young as two years old, classes offered in part include ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre dance, and even jazz/tap for adults.

Class sizes are limited to ten dancers apiece and classes begin on Monday, August 19. It is truly a full season for these dancers of rehearsals and performances that runs through recitals on May 18.
