Creston Police report: 6 arrests 7/12-14/2024
(Creston, Iowa) – Officials with the Creston Police Department say six people were arrested Friday through Sunday. Three of the arrests occurred Sunday:. 38-year-old Jessica Lynn Palmer, of Creston, was arrested for Assault (General). Palmer was taken to the Union County Jail where she was later released on $300 cash or surety bond; 58-year-old Scott Bradley Spurrier, of Orient, was arrested for OWI 1st Offense. Spurrier was taken to the Union County Jail where he was later released on $1000 cash or surety bond.; And, 23-year-old Juan Carlos Villegas, Jr., of Texas, was arrested at the Quality Inn, in Creston. Villegas was charged with Public Intoxication 1st Offense. Villegas was taken to the Union County Jail where he was later released on $300 cash or surety bond.

Creston baseball bringing stellar pitching, improved offense into rubber match with Harlan
(Creston) -- Creston baseball extended their season Friday, securing their spot in a rubber match with Harlan Monday night. The Panthers (24-10) have already got the upper hand in one rubber match this postseason as they beat Denison-Schleswig 10-4 after splitting their regular-season slate. Creston scored first and responded after Denison scored four in the fourth by scoring four of their own in the fourth and five more in the sixth. The offensive explosion backed up a stellar pitching performance from Parker Varner, who threw 4 1/3 innings innings with five strikeouts of two-hit baseball.

City looks to avoid softball field problems
The Mount Ayr city council discussed the future of adult slow pitch at their regular meeting Monday, July 15. Colton Bolles and Korey Beaman were in attendance to discuss the possibility of using the ball fields at Judge Lewis Park for another adult slow pitch season. City Administrator Brent Wise had asked for a representative to come and explain how they would handle the league this summer.

Dept. of Labor increases overtime threshold
More SWCC employees are entitled to overtime pay in accordance with a new ruling by the U.S. Department of Labor, which came into effect July 1. Since 2019, the total salary of executive/administrative/professional (EAP) employees nonexempt from overtime pay has been $35,568 annually, or $684 per week. Thanks to the April 26 ruling, the EAP salary threshold has gone up to $43,888 annually, or $844 per week.
