Colt Keith, Tigers come back to knock off Twins
Colt Keith had a triple, home run and three RBIs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 7-2 home win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series. Matt Vierling added two hits and three runs for Detroit. Royce Lewis hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Minnesota. Pitching in his last game before Tuesday's trade deadline, Detroit ace left-hander Tarik Skubal (12-3) earned the win, allowing five hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out eight in seven innings. Right-hander Joe Ryan (6-7) took the loss. He surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk in six innings. He also fanned eight. Minnesota held a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the sixth when the Tigers scored twice. Following leadoff single by Vierling, Keith hit an RBI triple down the right field line. The ball caromed off a side wall and went toward the infield, allowing Vierling more time to score and Keith to get to third. Two batters later, Mark Canha's sacrifice fly made it 3-2. With two outs in the seventh, Javier Baez hit a two-run homer to left-center to give Detroit a 5-2 lead. It was his third straight game with a homer after having just one in his first 63 games. After Vierling walked, Keith launched a two-run blast to right off Minnesota left-handed reliever Steven Okert to give Detroit a 7-2 lead. Minnesota opened the scoring in the first on Lewis' two-run shot, a blast to left-center for his 11th home run of the season. Detroit got one back in the bottom of the first when Canha chopped an RBI single to center that scored Vierling. --Field Level Media.
Lions coach Dan Campbell pleased with team's versatility in the secondary
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell likes the options he has in the secondary, shifting Brian Branch to safety and bolstering the group with rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw, along with veteran Carlton Davis. Arnold, a first-round draft pick, broke up a downfield pass to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown early during practice on Saturday at training camp. Lining up with the likely starters, he has made eye-opening plays during the first four days of camp. Drafting cornerbacks in the first two rounds showed how important it was for the Lions to beef up their defensive backfield.
Kerby Joseph: 'I Want to Lead the League in Interceptions'
The Detroit Lions have found a playmaking gem in third-year safety Kerby Joseph. A third-round pick in 2022, Joseph has paced the defense in interceptions in each of his first two NFL campaigns. Camp Notes: Branch looking forward to making plays at safety
Brian Branch played a little bit of safety as a rookie early and late in the year, but he spent the majority of his first season in the NFL as a slot cornerback and was terrific there. He totaled 74 tackles (50 solo), 13 passes defended and seven tackles for loss. He also ranked second among all rookies with three interceptions, one of which he returned for a 50-yard touchdown in the win over the Kansas City Chiefs in his NFL debut.
QB Adrian Martinez: From MVP of UFL to Jets training camp
Aaron Rodgers has more company in the quarterback room as the New York Jets signed former UFL MVP quarterback Adrian Martinez to the training camp roster Saturday. Martinez, 24, earned those MVP honors by throwing for 1,749 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for a league-leading 528 yards last season for the Birmingham Stallions. He was also named the game's MVP when the Stallions dominated the San Antonio Brahmas 25-0 to win the UFL Championship in June. The Fresno, Calif., native played four years at Nebraska before transferring to Kansas State in 2022 for his final year of eligibility. After going undrafted in 2023, Martinez had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions before being waived during final roster cuts last summer. Martinez will be competing with not only Rodgers, but also Tyrod Taylor, Jordan Travis and Andrew Peasley for quarterback reps with the Jets. --Field Level Media

Which Lions player do you want to hear more about at training camp?
My answer: Admittedly, my observations have been a bit lacking when it comes to line play—particularly on offense. Part of that is because the pads haven’t come on yet, part of it is because line play is hard to diagnose with the naked eye without the benefit of replay.
Michigan Federal Court Endorses New State Senate Map, Addresses Detroit Area Gerrymandering Concerns
A Michigan federal court has approved the newly drawn map for the state's Senate districts, marking an end to the redrawing process that addressed concerns of racial gerrymandering in the Detroit area. This judicial endorsement concluded the case where the court found multiple districts originally drawn by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) had unjustly diluted Black voting power, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The new Senate districts, however, will not be utilized until the 2026 election cycle, thus maintaining current political structures in the interim.
How Erik Gustafsson sees himself helping Detroit Red Wings: 'Feel very confident'
Patrick Kane's scouting report on Erik Gustafsson gives hope to a Detroit Red Wings team eager to keep progressing. Gustafsson's arrival on the opening day of free agency on a two-year, $4 million deal was the result of events that shaped the Wings as they chased a playoff spot all the way to Game 82 only to come up short. The Wings needed a defenseman who could help ameliorate the offense lost when Shayne Gostisbehere signed elsewhere, and someone who was cheaper than Jake Walman, whose status as a healthy scratch down the stretch made his $3.4 million salary cap hit untenable.
