Rutgers-Newark Women's Volleyball Opens 2024 Campaign with Twinbill Split at Keystone
LA PLUME, PA | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball squad opened the season with a twin-bill split against Keystone (2-0) and Goucher (0-1). Match 1: Keystone 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) Aliyah Sanchez led the Scarlet Raiders (0-1) with five kills in the opening match of the tri-match while Maryann Ijeh tallied three total blocks on the defensive side. Sofia Green was the leader for Keystone with a match-high 9 kills.
Wilkes-Barre's Kirby Park centennial celebration set for Sept. 7
In 1924, businessman and philanthropist F.M. Kirby, commissioned the construction of Kirby Park, as a generous donation to the City of Wilkes-Barre. The opening of the park was marked with a large celebration known as Kirby Day.

Big Second Quarter Lifts #11 Field Hockey to 2-1 Win
YORK, PA – The #11 York College field hockey team opened their 2024 season with a hard fought 2-1 win over the University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon in York. The Royals opened the scoring in the first quarter but the Spartans scored a pair of goals in the second to earn the one-goal victory.
Beaver Area uses 28-point third quarter outburst to roll past Blackhawk
BEAVER — Beaver Area’s offense picked up right where it left off last week after its Week 0 win as it used a 28-point third quarter to cruise in Saturday afternoon’s game defeating Blackhawk 56-28. Following a Beaver Area (2-0) touchdown, the Cougars looked to have gained momentum back at the midway point of the third quarter when Brayden McCarthy broke free for a 34-yard score to cut the Bobcat lead down to 15 points with 7:34 to play in the quarter.
Chewy Pharmacy donates to Head Start in Pittston
Employees of Chewy Pharmacy online pet pharmacy’s Pittston site put together back-to-school bags containing crayons, markers and other essentials for 18 preschool students at Luzerne County Head Start. The bags were distributed to students in Classroom No. 2 at the Pittston New Street Center, which Chewy Pharmacy sponsors as part of the Adopt-A-Classroom program. Local doctor donates home-grown produce
Dr. Enrico Pelicci, a second-year resident physician at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, drops off a load of homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples at Friends of the Poor’s Jackson Terrace Food Pantry in Scranton. Pelicci has been growing, harvesting, and donating fresh-grown produce throughout the summer growing season. To date he donated more than 105 pounds of fruits and vegetables he grew at his home in Waverly Twp. “Farming is backbreaking work, but when we drop off what we’ve grown at Friends of the Poor, people are so grateful,” Pelicci said in a release.

Wilkes Men’s Soccer Fall to Ramapo on the Road

The game started with Ramapo quickly opening the scoring, recording two goals in the sixth and eighth minutes, both scored by Ponce Gianfranco. Wilkes responded in the 42nd minute with a goal by Landon Kelly (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus Senior High School) to get the Colonels on the board. After his father passed away in 2014, Pelicci scattered seeds in his honor in the backyard of his family’s Waverly Twp. home, waiting to see what happened. He ended up with more than 100 corn plants and a love for farming that grows every year alongside his various crops.
