Fatal 2020 Sterling apartment fire case in court this week
MORRISON, Ill. — The trial of a Rock Falls man charged with murder and arson is ongoing this week in Whiteside County. Steven Coleman is accused of setting the fatal fire on June 1, 2020, in the overnight hours at the Western Apartment Complex in Sterling. A 49-year-old woman and two girls, aged 8 and 13 died in the fire. A 35-year-old woman and 12-year-old were rescued and taken to the hospital. A Dixon firefighter and paramedic was also injured in the fire after falling through the floor.

Seebach’s Sweet Corn open for 2024 season, rain has aided growing
ROCHELLE — Seebach’s Sweet Corn kicked off its 2024 season of sales at 11594 E. Kyte Road in Flagg Center last week. The Seebach family has grown and sold sweet corn at the location for over 40 years. The tradition of selling sweet corn was started by the late Jerry Seebach, and it has since been carried on by his sons, Jeff and Scott, their stepmother, Christy and other family members and seasonal help.
Cherry Valley comfort K9 Stormy dies
CHERRY VALLEY, Ill. (WIFR) - Retired police comfort canine Stormy died, the Cherry Valley Police Department announced Tuesday. Officer Stormy joined the team in September of 2022 after graduating from the Paws & Stripes program which trains shelter dogs to become comfort dogs. Her coworkers say she is known throughout the community for her gentle demeanor and compassionate spirit.

Flooding to blame for Rockford man’s death, coroner’s office says
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office releases the name of the Rockford man who died during a flash flooding event. Dean Gulbranson, 76, was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m. July 15. According to the coroner’s office, his cause of death is drowning, although toxicology tests are pending.
