Washington 4-H Participates Crop Scouting State Competition
On July 25, youth from around the state enjoyed a day in the field at the Iowa Youth Crop Scouting Competition. Washington County 4-H sent two of the ten total teams of youth in grades 7-12 who traveled to the Field Extension Education Lab in Boone to test their integrated pest management skills through several tasks and challenges. The event, hosted by the Iowa State University Integrated Pest Management Program and Iowa 4-H Youth Development, provided youth with the opportunity to work with and learn from Iowa State faculty, staff, agronomists and professionals in crop-related careers. Washington County 4-H had two teams of youth who worked together May – July in preparation for the contest partially sponsored by Agriland FS. The Crop Scouting team and competition is a great opportunity for youth to learn more about agriculture, meet new friends, and test their agronomy knowledge. Washington County 4-H looks to continue this hands-on learning opportunity in the 2025 spring season to continue to educate, grow, and have fun with the future leaders of agriculture.
Continuance Granted in Gingerich Trial
A felony trial for a Kalona man has been delayed. Keegan Joe Gingerich faces nine total charges, six felonies, in a case that was set for pretrial conference last week. An Order For Continuance was filed by Counsel for the State and Defendant, with the Iowa District Court for Washington County. District Court Judge Joel Yates granted the Order because both parties are involved in plea negotiations. A Pretrial Conference has been scheduled for September 27th at the Washington County Courthouse, where Gingerich has been ordered to appear.
West Peoria business hit by car before smash-and-grab robbery, police say
The Peoria County Sheriff's Office is investigating a smash-and-grab robbery early Tuesday morning that may have involved a stolen vehicle. Sheriff Chris Watkins said that at 2:35 a.m., police were called to Express Liquors in the 2700 block of Farmington Road in West Peoria after a report of a smash-and-grab robbery at the store.
